Just wondering if anyone still here still uses a small cc driver. I have a love/hate relationship with my HiBore XLS depending on the day. One day I nail it every time, the next day, I want to throw it in the pond. Recently I have been bagging my trusty old Callaway Steelhead Reissue with the M10 steel shaft. I hit this driver on the "screws" 8 out of 10 times, and the other 2aren't very bad. Granted that when I am "one" with the HiBore, I get at least 15 to 20 more yards but the consistency is terrible. In grew up learning to play persimmon woods and tiny blades. I have tried larger headed irons and woods, but always go back to my small clubs. I think the 460cc messes with my head, leading me to swing like there is no tomorrow(I am not the only one with this problem).

In my  Warbird Hot stand bag:

 NP2 3H,  DCI 990 4-PW,  Forged + 54/12,  RAC 58/8,

Classic #1,  NXT Tour or  Burner TP

I do. The largest driver I have is a 983K, but I've gone to using a 975D 7.5*; like you, I seem to hit the smaller headed clubs better, or at least have more confidence in them. Maybe it's because I'm concentrating more on a good swing. My home course is REALLY tight, so the 975D helps me keep the ball down, and I haven't noticed any distance loss.

Yeah, I've got a 8.5* 975D with an R300 shaft somewhere in the golf closet. I think I need to get in there and find it. One of my home courses is fairly tight as well with sparse southern pines separating the fairways on several holes. With the HiBore, too many times I have found myself chipping through the trees or trying to hit a super high wedge back to my fairway.

I still use a Callaway GBB 250cc, and tonight I rebagged my old Dunlop PowerFlange 1wood that is about 200cc or less. I want to buy a 975D soon.

A guy i was playing with gamed a callaway steelhead driver. He hit it pretty well too, he was only about 10 yards behind me on most drives (275-280 for me) and he even out drove me on two holes. I guess it pays to just go with what your comfortable with. But if he was using a modern driver, he would have probably outdriven me on every driver hole.

Compare one of the early 2000s metal driver heads with the 460 cc. jumbos.

I often find the clubface on the earlier models is not that much smaller than on the 460 cc. You just get more backdoor mass.

I remember when the first really big drivers came out circa 2000. One of the female LPGA pros used one, and she cautioned that she never hit more than 10 practice drives a day with it. Otherwise, it messed up her alignment and sight picture with her other, smaller headed clubs. Wish I could remember who she was.

For many golfers, I think there may be "diminishing returns," or even lost productivity with supersized clubheads. Next question: Will 45 gram graphite shafts have the control and physical durability to match the increased clubhead speed?

Focus, connect and follow through!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Callaway BB Warbird here - 195cc.

When my usual playing partners start outdriving me, I'll consider an "upgrade". I don't see that happening any time soon since I hit my new(ish) Launcher 3-wood past them.

Absolutely!

A 230cc continues to be my fall-back driver (see below). When I get out of tempo with my YS-6, the UST/230cc combo settles me down and permits me to focus in on ball contact and swing efficiency.

I will admit that I do not like the appearance of any 400cc class head and only recently picked up a couple of Wishon 360cc's to backup my primary Vector 370cc.

However, I could easily use the 230cc for an extended period but I've noticed that can get off to a less than glamorous start due to the sloppier control the larger face on the 370cc had permitted.

Great thread. I recently purchased a Mizuno 600 and all I can do is fade or slice. I hit a cheap metal 3 wood consistently 250 or so and I can control it much easier. I am seriously considering buying a good 3 wood and just sticking with it. Golf seems a lot easier from the fairway.
