So, I got invited to stay at a house in Phoenix (Scottsdale) for the entire month of January and jumped at the chance. I know there are some very expensive courses in the area but are there any affordable courses in the Phoenix and surrounding metropolis? For me, affordable is $20 to $30 a round. Any info would be appreciated. I also heard something about the Southwest Golf Pass. Anyone have any info on that?

Also, I'd be interested in meeting up with other golfers. I play to about a 10 handicap, never drink and play, and live by the corollary that once I'm done playing, it's time to drink.

You will have difficulty finding those rates. I've gone to PHX the last three years in February (conferences....I mean golf) Probably most expenive course fees Jan-March.

Some of the cheaper places are as follows:

I'd like to second this request. There are a few jobs in the Phoenix area that I might be applying for next year at this time, to take when I graduate. I know about Phoenix area prices in summer, but I'd want to play year-round if I lived there.

What courses would someone living there play during the winter if they aren't a member of a private course? I figure the answer to that will help both me and the OP.

they are currently offering the 2009 pass (good until November). Don't know when the 2010 pass becomes available.

Look into resident rates.

In retrospect... duh! Same thing you and I do in Los Angeles! Thank you.

My advice is to get used to the heat and play in the summer :) (Edit: Sorry Bong - I just realized you'll only be here in Jan)

I tend to play more exec courses (Mtn Shadows is a nice 18 hole exec) in the winter and will splurge occasionally in the winter. I think you can do 18 over at Cave Creek (N Central Phx - it's a muni) for under $30. Golf prices didn't seem as high this past year. I haven't golfed much in Scottsdale, but all the courses I've looked at seem to be above $30.

Also, look on golfnow.com - they have really good discounts at times in the winter.

Cheers!

Thanks for the heads up on the golfnow.com site. I'll check it out. Sounds like you're in the area. Any info on the Southwest Golf Pass. It sounds like a good deal, but I don't know anyone that has used it.

Yeah, I'll just be there in the Winter and as it turns out, I'll be there for Dec and January - I just splurged for a condo for all of December. As far as playing in the heat, we get our share up here in Boise. This Summer was okay but the Summer prior was crazy hot. There were some days that I looked at nationwide temps and we were hotting than PHX. I'm not looking for super fancy clubhouses and swanky digs - I just want someplace to have a nice walk and keep swingin' throughout the Winter - a muni or exec course are perfect for me.

You will have to stick to muni's and executive courses at that price in the winter. You should be able to find some courses to play in the $30 -$50 range. Weekdays will be better priced. As time gets nearer look me up and I can help you out. I play every week and am always looking for good golfers to play with.

Ditto.

Brandon, where do you usually play?
Cheers!

During the summer I play a lot of courses in Scottsdale. I play in a league at Coldwater and usually will play anywhere in the valley. During the winter I stick w/ Coldwater, Cave Creek and anything that I can afford <$60. I work in the golf industry so I get a lot of free rounds at some very nice places.

I did a little more digging and found out about the Phoenix Golf Card ( http://www.phoenix.gov/SPORTS/golfee.html ). This looks like a really good deal and will get me in under my $30 a round limit. And the loyalty program is pretty sweet - play 10 rounds of 18 and get a free round.

Looks like it's the munis for me!

99% of the time I play at Quail Hollow and occasionally at Shadow Valley. I play Quail because it's a good workout to walk, pretty fun to play, and scenic to take my mind off the game when I'm not playing so well. I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot next time you're in town.

Shadow is really nice and the people working there are top notch. The highway is kind of a distraction. Speaking of, do you notice that more drivers in Idaho honk their horns to "mess" with golfers? It seems like every time I've played Shadow, at least two or three cars honked their horns at us. I don't recall stuff like this happening when I'm out of state.

Ya I've played Quail about 4 years ago.... it kicked my a$$. Maybe I should go check it out again. If I remember the greens had crazy breaks to them. Maybe you could be my tour guide around there because I'm sure there is a lot of "local knowledge" required.

You'll find plenty of courses with good rates, I usually use golfnow.com and also check the newspaper, the Arizona Republic, in the Wednesday or Thursday sports section you'll see a lot of specials.

Yeah, a lot of the holes require local knowledge. It doesn't help that the greens have crazy amounts of grain - the most I've ever played on. Sometimes I can look down at the green and see blades of grass that are around 3/8" to 1/2" long laying almost flat. Once you get used to them, they aren't that bad but it's always a shock for people playing the course for the first time. Give me a shout next time you're in town and we'll see if we can meet up.

Everardo,

I played with a guy yesterday that spends Winters in PHX and he seconded your golfnow.com recommendation. Thanks for the newspaper tip.

My (limited) Phoenix area (Surprise) experience. Played there in March while spring training was going on. Golf was not cheap. The day **after** spring training ended, so did the high rates. Wish we would have planned the trip a week later.
