Some years ago, I picked up a "First Flight" 5W and found it to be a handy little "tool" to have in the bag. After a long hiatus, I'm starting to play again and although I am relearning to strike the ball properly, I'm was pleased to fine that my swing is not far off the mark.
I picked up a new set of Adam's irons (4i-SW) and have recently discovered that there are now hybrid clubs. Be nice...when I played in the mid to late 90's, I don't think they existed.
I have noticed that a 2h seems to have the same loft as a 5W, and a slightly shorter shaft. Just curious if anyone has ever compared these two clubs and what your general observations are.

I play (and prefer) a 2H. Think of it more as a 6W than a 5W in regards to distance. It's just really easy to hit, since the shaft is alittle shorter. They weren't around back then, and are popular now for a reason.

Get a 2 hybrid because it is much easier to hit out of trouble, esp. the rough. If you never find yourself in the rough (which is very few of us) then go with the 5 wood.

I am not a fan of the hybrids, for the same reason most people like them (not a fairway wood, not a long iron) I don't like them. I have never been able to hit them and have tried several different manufactors.

That being said, I think you should try to hit them along with a 5 wood and decide for yourself. Only you will be able to decide if you like them.

If you can still find one somewhere, check out a "Wison Staff Fybrid". It's one of their hybrid/fairway wood line that purportedly bridges the gap between hybrids and fairway woods. Their print ads say it replaces a 5-wood, a 2-iron, and a 2 hybrid.

Personally, I've never hit a 2h, but the Fybrid has already replaced my persimmon Hogan Apex 5-wood very nicely. Similar yardage and easily as workable. When I get more comfortable working the ball with it, the 2-iron will likely be replaced as well.

I also prefer a 2H over a 5wood. I think they are more versitile and you can hit them just as easily from the rough. Rough shots can be tricky with a 5W. I dont hit my 2h much shorter than i would hit a 5W, so i dont really notice that much difference. I hit my 2H about 220 in the air - i would only hit a 5W perhaps 10 yards further. I can back it off and change flights with my hybrid, too. Which i couldnt do with the same control if i was using a fairway wood.

That's the really helpful bit, I've always been good with a 5W, but my 20* Callaway Heavenwood Hybrid can be pushed to 230, pulled back to 180, drawn or faded, hit high and soft, or low and fast.

I am another who prefers the 2H to the 5W.

I agree with that... you have to try both for yourself.

these are some of the biggest reasons I like the 2H better... not much distance loss and much more control... and no comparison out of the rough, the hybrid is much easier.

I prefer my 2H. Much easier (for me) to hit from tight lies off the deck and rough.

My 3W and 5W tend to stay in the garage.

From reading weeks of posts on hybrids vs. fairway woods, I see the following patterns.

Fairway wood of the same loft as a hybrid will go farther because the shaft is longer. How much longer depends on how the two clubs perform for golfer A.

Carrying both a 3 and 5 wood becomes attractive...
* If you can hit fairway woods from off the ground
* You can use the extra distance

Someone who can hit a hybrid 220 yds. will find the club more attractive as a 5-wood replacement than someone who only hits the hybrid 180 yards. Also, it depends on where you want to put the "extra club." If you carry 4 wedges, you may want to dump a long club.

In your case, you might keep the 5-wood and add a 3hybrid. This would bridge the distance between your "nifty little tool" 5-wood and the 4-iron.

I tend to be the opposite of DavidFehertysBike . I hit the 5 wood very well, and struggle with hybrids. Depends on what works for you.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Add me to the 5W camp. I gave up on my 2H Rescue after swearing for the 10th time I was going to snap it over my knee if I hit it into the woods left again. I'm sure now that I'm playing better I should give it another shot, especially because I'm not exactly tearing it up with my 5W.

To tell the truth, I'm hitting my 3I so well off the tee (215 with a gorgeous little low draw) that I'm tempted to break out the 1I and 2I again and see if I can't get them back in the mix. Can't imagine there are too many people opting for long irons, but think it might be worth a shot.

go with the hybrid, its more accurate and softer into greens than a fairway wood i find. alot easier to hit too and they still manage to get good distance.
