I accidently gave the Taylormade TP black a try and wow - I love this ball off my driver - very straight and much longer than any other ball I have tried. I also like it around the green but don't like it as much off the putter as the pro v1, but after a few rounds with it I am putting well with it.

Today I tested the TP Black against the TP Red. In short I didn't get a massive diffrence. Both drove as well with simular distance but they had very diffrent ball flights. The Black shot out low and then climbed sharply, well the red came out higher and climber at a steady rate. As the fairways are soft and wet right now both balls didn't roll out much, so I can't really test this out.

Both had plenty of spin on iron shots, I create ample spin even with mid level ball and I had no trouble getting either ball to check up with a 5 iron from 170 and could suck both back a few feet with a full wedge.

So based on the driver ball flight wich ball should i go with?

I have several dozen of both the Reds and Blacks. I try to use the Reds on wet or soft greens because they don't spin quite as much as the Blacks. They both are soft and will spin but the Blacks are a little better on harder greens.
I can't wait to play the Blacks with my new Vokey wedges.

I guess I haven't noticed any difference with my driver.

Glad you're happy with the TMs!

They do have an LDP version of both balls. LDP balls have more dimples which will give you a lower ball flight. Your blacks may be the LDP ball?

The Reds seem longer to me because of the low spin they will not balloon in the air. The Blacks are great for hitting into greens because of the higher spin. I usually, when not playing a competitive match, hit the Red off the tee and if I hit the fairway....switch over to the Black to hit into the green. I dont do this if I miss the fairway because I cannot guarantee I can recreate the correct lie as I can in the fairway.

Also on Par 3's I hit the Black. For me the Red is longer than the Pro-V1's that is why I switched.

It sounds like your drives are ballooning a little with the blacks (not too much though if both are going similar distances) so I would go with the reds. A ballooning ball will cost you more distance into a headwind. I don't notice much difference between the two balls in terms of flight and spin, the red is a little softer off the putter, I prefer that one.

Have you noticed that the TP reds now say "Tournament Edition" on the box. I asked a guy at Golfsmith about this and was told that the original 2009 TP Reds were too hot and could not be played in tournaments. Anyone know anything about this?

There was a screw-up during manufacturing of some of the TP Red balls(a very small amount, less than 1%), they were too "hot" so TaylorMade had to get rid of them and introduce the new model, with a new label.

A little bit less spin but still very good considering the price difference between the TP Black LDP and the Titleist Pro-V1.

Anyone notice that the TP Red or Black are not nearly as durable as the ProV1? I bought a box of the red and the black when I saw them for 27.50 at Walmart. I really like them both but they are beat all to hell after a round compared to the ProV.

Yes I noticed that. I feel in love with the TP black when they were released. I noticed the lack of durability right away but overlooked it because it seemed to be the perfect ball for me. Then, I won a sleeve of the new tour i balls. I've found them to have everything the black had plus really good durability. I hardly ever got more than a roundsworth of play from a single TP black.

I was always under the impression that the TP Red spun more than the TP Black. Atleast thats how i took it when i read the review on this website.

That was in the first version (pre-LDP). The LDP reversed that (but kept the same launch conditions: higher for the black, lower for the red).

So then would the red's be better for distance because they don't spin as much? or still the blacks as with the original's pre LDP.

depends on the player. for me, the TP-Blacks are a little longer as my ball flight is pretty low and I gain some yards due to extra carry with the higher launch. I use the Reds on windy days.

In the new, non LDP versions of the blacks, are they still higher spinning off full shots?  I gamed the red until I went through about two-dozen.  I tried looking for them online, but can't find them anywhere, so I just bought the blacks.  Whoa, bad move for me.  They balloon like crazy.  I lost 50 yards yesterday on a dead headwind stock shot compared with a low-knuckle fade off the same tee box.  I'm basically wanting the TP reds from a couple of years ago:  takes off, floats for a couple of seconds with a subtle upward motion, lands soft.
