I have been away from golf for about 10 years and I am going to get back in. I am starting to do some research on irons because that is where I am going to start. About all that I know is that my club head speed with the driver is 105 mph and I believe that would make a stiff shaft fit me the best. At 31 years old and 6'0" standard lie and club length has always fit me pretty well.

I am looking at Mizuno irons (and other clubs actually) because they are the only iron that I can find that is not made in China, but I am also trying not to break the bank at the same time. I am not apposed to buying a used set or an ebay sey but I don't want to get taken and get a counterfeit set.

I am looking at a set of Mizuno mp 57 irons and the reviews look pretty good but this might be a little to advanced for me. Most of my purchases will be online because there is not a really good pro shop in my area where I can go and hit a large variety of clubs. Is this a decent iron for a second time beginner?

Any advice is appreciated.

Take a look at rockbottomgolf.com They're a ligit site and have some great deals on clubs. Try looking at Mizunos MX line of clubs. They would likely fit your game much better than MP's. Good luck!

I see that you play the TM r7 iron. What do you think of it? This is another iron on my list to find and hit.

I like them. They have good feel are forgiving and long. I'm not a shot shapper so I can't comment on that. Just checked Rockbottom and they have a set of MX950's for $399. Thats a great deal. 3 &4 hybrid 5-pw set. You can pick up R7's now for the mid 300's or so. Also the R7's have a 1 inch longer than standard shaft stock.

R7's at rockbottom for $329

They also have a set of forged Ben Hogan Apex edge CFT irons for $199. If I wasn't happy with my R7's I'd grab them.

Seriously, if you are willing to forego the latest and greatest and choose from a somewhat limited selection, you could build a very nice collection of irons, driver, fairway woods and hybrids at Rockbottom for an amazing price. I haven't been especially pleased with my play with my Nike Sumo Sq fairway wood, so on a whim I just picked up an Adams 3 Wood on Rockbottom for $39 (I am a lefty, so my choices are more limited than for rightys on RB). Many of their clubs are "that" cheap, but still excellent options. Good luck.

Equipment:
Ping K15 Driver (10.5º) - Diamana BB R flex; Ping G15 4 Wood (TFC R flex); Ping G15 20* Hybrid (TFC R flex); Ping G15 23* and 27* Hybrids (AWT R flex steel); Ping G15 Irons 6-GW (AWT R flex steel); Ping I-Wedge 54* Wedge; CG14 BP 58* Wedge; Odyssey Black Series Tour Designs #9 Putter

Just a quick update. I went to a golf USA yesterday and hit the Mizuno MX-200 irons and I think I am in love! These things are smooth and consistent (for having 10 years off anyways).

Question: How accurate are the simulators that they use at the retail stores? The salesman told me that he hits the ball the same distance at out local golf courses as the simulator shows but I am a little sceptical. The simulator showed that I was hitting the 7 iron 182 yards on average and I had 3 or 4 shots that said that they were just over 200 yards! Can this be possible?

I play MX200's and love them to bits.

Those yardages seem a bit long to me, unless you are really hooding the club face. Most of the guys I play with average between 140-165 with a 7 iron, 155 being about the norm. Having said that, you could just be a big, strong lad....

Thanks for the responses. I am 6' and weigh about 160 so I am pretty sure that it is not my size and strength! I was playing the ball back in my stance a bit which might have caused the "hooding" of the club face that you were talking about. I am not farmiliar with that term.

I was playing the ball back in my stance a bit which might have caused the "hooding" of the club face that you were talking about. I am not farmiliar with that term.

A friend of mine has his hands positioned a long way in front of the ball at address, which does in fact "hood" or "de-loft" the clubface. This results in a very low ball trajectory when he hits it.

Hence, on par 3's where I would be hitting a 7 iron say, he will only need to hit a 9 iron to effectively play the same shot. He often comments that he is a longer hitter than me, but he's not. It's his set up. Put him on a course where he has to play a lot of high shots, or clear big expanses of rough or heather off the tee and he really struggles. 200 yards carry with a 7 iron is verging on "pro" distances. Hope that helps Rob
