So my 3 wood is a 15* and I hit it about 235-245... I'm dropping my 5 wood because I can't hit it worth jack and want to get a hybrid that will be a good club between my 4 iron (24* - 205yds) and 3 wood..

Which loft should I pick on the hybrid? Gonna get the adams pro black:

16*, 18*, 20*, 23*, 26*

I want the 18* but not sure if I want such a long-shafted club.....

advice?

20*, 20*, 20*. With your 3 wood and 4 iron distances (very similar to mine), a 20* hybrid is going to be effective from 210 up to 230.

I believe the 20 degree would closely duplicate the 3 iron as far as distance goes.

You are getting really good distance from your 4 iron and decent distance from the 3 wood. I can see why you'd substitute the 5 wood for and iron-like club.

What loft is the 5 wood? I carried a 19* rescue and a 19* 5 wood for a while and there was a good 10-15 yards between them due to shaft length, then replaced the rescue with a 909h 19* and that was much stronger than the old one so I could play it from 190-230 so dropped the 5 wood.

I also carry a 20* to fill that gap. Perfect for me.

I just picked up a $49 maxfli 3iron hybrid yesterday from Dick's to test how I hit an 18* and it was friggin awesome. 272 was my long on the simulator, average in the high 250's.. 160mph ball speed, went to the range and was hitting 'em 250-260. 18* (to me at least) is a good mix of steep enough that you make good contact, flat enough for max distance. Hits like a 4-5 iron (the hybrid at least).. goes like a 5 wood.

I'd say the 20˚ will get you 220 easy.

I chose a 23˚ Adams Idea Pro Gold - couldn't be more pleased with it. I can rip it out to 235 or cut it 190. Very useful club.

Well... I play a 14* 3-wood that ranges about 230-240 off a good shot... my adams idea pro 18* goes about 215-220, my 20* idea pro goes about 205-210... and my 4-iron is about 195-200.

so, for me I would choose the 18* if I only had one club. Also, FWIW... I can hit the 18 just as well as the 20 from pretty much any situation except really heavy rough.

My 3 hybrid is 20 deg loft as well so thats what i would go with, I use mine for all my long fairway shots as I only hit my 3 wood off the tee anymore. I have 3 hybrid clubs myself though, a 23 deg 4h and 26 deg 5h and use them all a lot.

The loft doesn't matter. You're not trying to fill a degree gap; you want to fill a distance gap. Try out a few of the lofts to determine which one fits your distance gap the best. It may be the 18* or it may be the 20* or even the 23*. You can't just go by lofts because too many things besides loft (shaft, COR, CoG, etc.) play into how far the ball will go.

the 2h will be the perfect loft IMO so i can't see you going wrong with the 20 degree. just make sure you hit the club with different lofts to make sure if fits your distance gap. you might hit the 20 so well but it might not fit the distance you are looking for

  • 2 weeks later...
I am having the same problem selecting the right loft of a hybrid.

I'm a male but at 5' 4" I use women's clubs since the shafts are perfect length for me (not having to cut them down). Also I prefer a high flex shaft.

Anyway, I currently have a Maxfli Fire 4 (21 deg.) and Maxfli 5 (24 deg) hybrid. Hit them both well. The 6 iron included in my iron set is a cross between an iron and a utility club. I can't hit it worth a darn. So my question is I am looking at various Hybrid brands including Nike Sumo's and Taylor Made Draws to replace my current 6 iron.

Most ladies hybrids come in 26 deg loft and 30 degree loft. I am worried the 26 degree loft club will be too much like my current 24 deg hybrid. Also worried that the 30 degree hybrid will be too much like my 7 iron.

I use the (21 deg) 4 hybrid now for shots roughly 185-190 and the 5 hybrid (24 deg) for shots 170-175. Looking for that perfect 160-165 yd club. Would 26 degree or 30 degree be better ?

I did some browsing on my lunch break at Dicks and found out that TaylorMade makes a 28 deg loft hybrid with a flexy shaft. So this is a perfect compromise between the 26 and 30 degrees I was looking at. Golfsmith.com had it marked down from $150 to $79.99 with free shipping so I pulled the trigger.
Probably won't get to hit though until next season (got a baby on the way this week) !!

The 20˚ might be good, but I hit my 4i 195-200, my 19˚ 585h 200-230, and my 3w 230-250. For me, I think the extra degree more of loft on the club would make it not cover the gap between 4i and 3w as well. I might go 18˚ and learn to play it 80%-100%.

    • Hi everybody!  I am new to the golf game. I have taken some lessons and got fitted for clubs a couple of months ago. I usually score between 110-120 for 18 holes.  I bought a Stealth driver last year and have been hitting consistently with it 210-230 yds on the simulator. But when I take it out on the course, every drive is a severe slice!  I played 18 holes yesterday at the club where I belong. I removed the driver from my bag and used the 5 iron to drive with. I hit straight 16 out of 18 drives, 180 - 200 yds. I used the 5i - putter for the rest of my game.  I ended the day with a 92. Question: Does it make sense for me to continue playing with irons only until I get further along in my game before I reintroduce the Driver and woods again? Or should I continue to struggle with the Driver and woods and shoot in the 100’s again? To me it’s a no brainer, but for those more advanced I am interested to get feedback.
    • Thank you, currently I only had the 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons in the bag. I was never finding myself in a situation to use the 4 and 5 so I dropped those a while ago. The 60W is what I've been practicing with the most in the back yard, but that's only with short chipping. I don't think I've ever practiced hitting my wedges at 80% - 100% apart from yesterday. Maybe I should be doing that more. Generally I would be using a 9 iron if I was out about 75 yards or so. I am not really sure I understand your mention of the 60W and 3H. Aren't these going to be giving me completely different results? Unfortunately I am not able to adjust the loft on the hybrids I have. I looked into the Shot Scope H4 you suggested and this seems really neat and handy, however I am struggling to understand how it works. Am I correct in assuming it doesn't track the ball distance until you hit the ball a second time? Say I drive from the tee and walk up to my ball, tag the next club and hit the ball. Is it at this point when I tag my next club while standing next to my ball that is knows the distance? Thank you, I am going to give the local shop a call and check their prices and see what they can offer.
    • Do you know what their handicaps are? The handicap system isn't perfect and given the higher variance from higher handicaps, I think low handicap players would be expected to win maybe 60% of their matches? I'm not exactly sure what that number is and it will vary with the handicap difference, but if they're generally very low handicaps, then they might be at 60% likely to win a game. Given it's 16 vs 16, that's a lot of games to win. If it's 60%, then that's around an 80% chance that they'll win a given match. At 80% chance of winning, 21 wins in a row is about 1 in 108 times. Pretty unlikely, but not unheard of. It's pretty sensitive to what that individual win percentage is too. If it's 65%, then 21 wins is about 1 in 9. If it's 55%, then 21 wins is 1 in about 5,700. Clearly it's not as simple as this because that win likelihood is going to change match to match as they play lower handicap teams or higher handicap teams, but I don't think it's a "yes they're cheating" thing at all.
    • I'll be honest, the only reason the 2 iron was in my bag is because I tend to hit the ball into the tree's fairly often. And I was using it to help me keep the ball very low to get out of the tree's while avoiding getting much loft to hit branches. I guess I can drop the 3H as well. Would it be wise to give a higher loft fairway wood a try as well, something like a 26 degree? I believe there is only one golf shop where I live that has a golf simulator and trainer. I see they offer free fitting with a purchase from the fitter. I'll have to check how much they charge without a purchase, I've read a few stories about fitters on this forum that just wanted to sell the person the most expensive clubs and that kind of deters me a bit. They do offer lessons as well. I'll give them a call and ask them a bit more about these services. Thank you!
