After losing my job in February and wondering about ever finding a job again, I finally got a job offer and accepted it on Friday.

In celebration, I get to buy myself a new driver and 3 wood. Right now, I am looking at the Callaway Diablo, Taylor Made Burner 09 and 07, and maybe an offering from Ping. There is an outside chance I could pick up a Callaway FT-3 or FT-5 but that is unlikely. I would buy the FT-3 through 3balls.com for $79.00 if by some miracle I end up hitting it better than anything else.

The Taylor Made 07 is the front runner right now because it seems to be the longest of the group in general and length is an issue for me. It's also the best price at the moment which is an added benefit.

I fully understand that I have to hit them all to see which I hit best and nobody here can tell me which is better.

So, my question is .........are there any other drivers I should consider? Everything I'm looking at is in the $150-$200 range.

My concern is length since my average drive is in the 230-240 range. The good news is I hit the ball straight - stupid straight. So, I can afford a little loss of accuracy to get another 20 yards. I also hit the ball really low, with all my clubs. So, I usually get a driver with a lot of loft as well.

Currently, I am playing a Callaway X460 with a regular stock Callaway shaft. My plan is to get to Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy early on Tuesday so I can get on one of the launch monitors to help with my choice.

If I can find a magic wand (which I know is higly unlikely) that can add distance to my t-shots it could make a huge difference in my ability to score. It would put the par 5s at my home course and most of the courses I play within reach in two - right now they aren't.

The new 3 wood will also help with that since I'm currenly playing a Golfsmith XPC tight lies knock off from 1999.

I just swapped my Nike Sumo 2 for an 09 Burner. Last night on the range I was longer and may slice was boarder line fade. Both big improvements. Give the Burner a swing you'll like it.

My guess is there is about a 100% chance I end up with one of the Burner drivers. Although my five year old will throw a fit if my new driver isn't a Callaway.

He told me if I hit the Taylor Made better, I still had to buy the Callaway. Since his favorite player,Phil Mickelson, plays them, I have to as well.

The Cleveland Hibore XLS drives the ball with a higher ball flight. Try that one also.

The 07 Burner 10.5 sounds like it would be a good fit for you. You said that you hit your shots low have you considered a 4 or 5 wood instead of a 3 wood to help get the ball in the air.

I will ad the Cleveland to my list and ask about a high loft shaft.

It does look like the Burner is a match - my guess is that's what I will end up with. But, I want to keep an open mind to anything else.

Driver are like putter and very personal, so I recommend trying all the drivers you are considering along with your current driver and try them on the launch monitor or golf simulator and see what works best for your particular golf swing.

Titleist 910 F15 & 21 degree fairway wood
Titleist 910 hybrid 24 degree

Although my five year old will throw a fit if my new driver isn't a Callaway.

Just do it like the pros - play whatever driver you like (1 vote for 07 Burner) - and put a Cally Headcover over it, and your kid will be happy :).

Burner 9°
FW Burner 15°
Burner Rescue 19°

That's a great idea but won't work. He knows all of Callaway's logos and will catch me.

Actually, it might be worth a try!!

Maybe I will get lucky and the Diablo will work out best - I doubt it, but we can hope.

Tried about 9 different drivers over a period of six weeks before
deciding on the Cleveland Monster Hibore XLS, 10.5, yellow grey 50 gram shaft and I love it! Noisy it is, but so what. My golf partner borrowed it and went to the driving range and was amazed how consistently straight and far he hit with it though he found it whippy. Because of the noise, he ended up with TM R7.
You know this: ultimately give your selection a good try over a period of time and you'll be very pleased with your decision. Good luck.

If branding is a concern, the Diablo would have been my second choice. And I'm a TM fan/customer. . Go with whatever feels good.

I just saw that the FT-5 is on sale at a few places for $150. Anyone know how it compares on distance with the Diablo and Burner?

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
