Let's say say you can hit a 5 iron 180 yds. Is there an estimated distance of, let's say, 10 yds between each iron? If all variables were exact, could this be true? I'm asking because I don't seem to put much more distance on my 5 iron compared to my 7 iron. I kind of feel that my distances are similar from my 5 to 8 iron. I know I am not hitting pure irons shots. I am still new to the game, but was just curious. Maybe I am thinking that distances between irons are longer than they really are?

I think somewhere in the 10 yd range is sort of the typical target. It's what I assume, even though I'm nowhere near consistent enough to actually measure it in any meaningful way. It seems to be roughly right...

It's pretty common to have trouble getting distance out of the longer irons when your ballstriking is less than ideal. I find that I'm pretty hit or miss shorter than my 7 iron -- the lower irons certainly have lower trajectories as expected, but I don't necessarily get much extra distance out of my 4I than my 6I... My current irons are a lot better about this than my old no-name starter set were, though. So I'd say work on the striking... of course, I barely know what I'm talking about so hopefully some more experienced voices will come in and confirm this or explain why it's BS.

Ten yards is a good median, but it varies.

As a player's ball striking improves - distances with irons become more defined and the distances between irons become more consistent.

Distance control is hugely important to scoring well.
Being pin high and 50 feet right versus being on line and 50 feet short is a wash, but being pin high and on line is far better than being short or long and on line.
You can only get the ball to pin high if you can control your distances.

10 - 15 yards depending on swing speed. I tend to have about a little more than a 10 yard gap between irons but that is is real rough. A 7 iron can go 150-170 depending on how am I swinging, time of year etc. Hell in the same round in the same condinitions I can hit the same iron +_ 10 yards. It not odd for long iron distance to bunch, as people to tend not to swing the same way with them as they have less confidence in them. Keep playing/practicing and it will work out.

Well for me my irons go like this:
5 iron - 170 yards
6 iron - 150 yards
7 iron - 140 yards
8 iron - 130 yards
9 iron - 120yards
pw - 100 yards
sw - 80 yards

Some clubs have bigger gaps than others.
Also, it depends on how i'm swinging I can hit my 6 iron 160 yards if I hit it hard and 140 if I grip down and swing softer

As long as my ball striking is inconsistent, it's difficult to tell. If I do hit it great, the difference is closer to 15 than 10, but I do come up short often. So I've been using 10 yards more lately. I like to use the 7i as a starting point and add or remove 10 yards for each club going up and down. That would make a 4i to 180, but I can still fly it 190 if I hit it great.

It's mostly about ball striking for me, which is kind of a dilemma. From 150 meters I can pick the 6i, but I know I can get there with my 7i with a good swing. Do I pick more club than I need with a good swing, or pick the right club and rely on hitting it good? I want to get on the green, but I don't want to assume I'm going to hit a bad shot, so I usually pick the club I can reach with a good swing. Also depends on hole location and if there are problem behind or ahead. If I have to fly a bunker, water or some other obstacle I might pick more club to make sure I don't come up short, but rather risk going a bit far if I strike it well.

There are no estimates that you can rely on, it's different from player to player. If you are looking to find your distances, a range finder is golden. If you are playing a casual round with little activity on the course, hit 5-6 balls with different clubs and measure up the distance to each. The best way is to have a open field you can hit balls at. Measure up 100 to 160 yards with a range finder or some manual device. A piece of string works if you know the distance on it. You can probably find something that is exactly 100 yards long. Fasten the rope in one end, pull it with you until it's all out. There's 100 yards. Then you can divide it in half and find 150 yards. The rest you can find with a measuring band or tape.

Get your shag bag balls, put a number on each of them to represent each iron. Hit 5-10 balls with each iron, then go up and see how far they went.

The pro I'm having lessons with told me something which is exactly what you're seeing!

He said that while my swing is developing and I'm not hitting 100% cleanly, I'll probably notice a 10 yard gap on shorter irons, but probably wouldn't see a lot of distance from around 5-8 until I'm hitting them properly.

It makes sense really because you need to make a better contact with a 5 iron than a 9 iron as there's a lot less height so if you don't hit it cleanly then it's likely to hit the floor sooner and come to a stop!

Jaybird has is right. Distance gaps between short irons tend to be a little more, closer to 15 for accomplished players, and decrease as longer irons are used. For me (not accomplished) there is a bigger gap between 5 iron and 4 because that is my first hybrid. As your swing gets more effecient you hit the longer irons closer to the sweet spot and you will naturally do a better job of keeping your hands ahead of the club. This allows the club to play at its proper loft and of course is more effecient. This is why you will see so much chatter on the site from better players picking wedges, hybrids etc that help them get the gaps they want.

for me, the most important thing is to have a max distance for each iron, then be able to hit that iron anywhere from 50-90% of that max distance, this way you eliminate the in between club dilemma. to be the best tee to green player you can be it is vital to be very flexible with iron distances.

I think my gaps are somewhere between 10 and 15 yards. But i can go at a 7 to get it to go 170, but stock is 160.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. Seems that I was on the right track about the distances. I know there are a lot of variables involved with yardage. In the spring, I really hope to improve my ball striking. I am going to really concentrate on keeping track of yardages for my irons.
