Hi guys just a quick question! I posted and item about what flex driver would be suitable for my driver last month and said my swing speed was around 88-94 mph! Since then people have been posting on various threads that their swing speed was 122!! surely its not mph!! is it kph??? if so my swing speed would be 141-151 kph!!

If this is correct would i be regular or stiff shaft??

Tiger's SS is I think around 120 mph. When you high numbers, it is usually ball speed, which can exceed 190 mph for heavy hitters.

yeah it was more thank likely in mph.. it might been the internet swing speed formula though and not the laws of physics swing speed.

190 ball speed is super fast

120 mph is an attainable driver ss.

120mph is very obtainable. Fast, but obtainable

I would say i have quite a quick swing with driver! my takeaway and follow through can be quite fast at times! On my old r7 limited driver i had 10.5 deg regular matrix x-con shaft in it and was more consistent than when i got it re shafted with stiff flex v2 shaft!! different pros and custom fit tell me i need stiif and others say regular!! ive hit different ones now and im so so confused!!!! Every other day i post things about drivers!!!

A couple things you need to know. 1, yes on this site virtually everybody's swing speed is in MPH, not KPH unless you stumble onto a foreign site where the metric system's common. 2. Golf is like fishing, where 2 lb bass are eventually 5 pounders after the story is told. 275 yard drives turn into "300 yard drives" eventually through story telling and MANY golfers have incorrect perceptions of their actual speeds and distances because of it. You'll see plenty of people claiming 300 yard drives straight down the middle but with handicaps of 22..... Believe it or not, 250 is still a distance many golfers don't reach with consistency. My dad's a single digit handicapper and his swing speed is 88-94 just like yours. I'd say this is correct, which would put you on the lower end if you're a man aged 18-30.... roughly just under average 30-40.....and right on average 40+. Above average in all for a woman unless you're talking about LPGA. 94 isn't a bad SS, but several people on here do have 120-125. Mine is 120-123, but I'm 6'0, 23 years old, fairly well put together and an ex college baseball player. I'd trade my swing right now for one that was 105 and consistently down the pipe.

anyways all I'm basically trying to say is that yea the 122s you read are in MPH, not KPH..and your SS isn't as low as it seems to you because 122 is fairly high for non pro golfers I'd say. If you went to a nice golf course and clocked everybody who teed off that day, I'd say probably 5% of less have a swing speed on the course of 120+...it's just not that common. Just for the record... Tiger's average swing speed is in the mid 120's according to where I checked, and he's got one of the higher ones.

If I were you I'd find what your typical swing is exactly... a 6 mph range is fairly large. If you're usually in the upper 80's I'd go with regular flex. But if you're typically in the mid 90's and can bump it up to uppers when you really turn it loose, I'd go with stiff.

If that 88-94 is with you swinging as hard as you can on a launch monitor though I'd stick with regular, but if it's nice and controlled stiff could work. Also depends alot on tempo. If you've got a quick tempo try stiff, if it's slow I'd stay regular for sure.

By far the most important thing about a driver is to play what you're comfortable with. If you've hit a regular flex your whole life and are accustomed to it, you'll probably struggle a bit at first if you switch the flex. You're sort've in the grey area where your stats would indicate either would work for you. Maybe try a shaft that's rated S but is light in weight with a lower cpm, or a R shaft that's a little heavier with a higher cpm. That way you can get something in the middle. Main thing is go with whats comfortable and works!

Mazza 78,

Advice from the last two golf pros I worked with: If control isn't a problem, go with regular flex. As your swing improves, you will pick up extra yards in distance.

for your swing speed i would definitely go with a regular flex.

once you start getting in the 100s is when you need to think about a stiff flex

I agree. One pro told me that even though you may swing mid to high 90s on the monitor when you're nice and fresh, you may not swing that on hole 16. You may not even swing that on hole 1 when you are trying to stay nice and smooth to put the ball in play. If you are somewhere in the middle, go to the softer flex. Or like the other poster mentioned, get a shaft that is somewhere in between.

Last time on the swing monitor with driver in hand I was swinging about 93-94 consistently. However when on the course I think I ease it back a bit, so I went with regular flex, with all of my clubs. My swing mechanics are a lot better now though, I wonder what I swing now...

For what it's worth, I was recently fitted for irons. My swing speed was consistently 80-82 mph. I hit a 7 iron consistently 155-160 yards. It was recommended I go with a stiff shaft 7i-PW; stiff shaft soft-stepped 3i-6i.

Point being; there's a lot more that goes into a shaft recommendation than simply swing speed. Tempo, swing mechanics, ball striking ability all play a role. Best to get custom fitted for this reason, IMHO.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
