so i finally got to really demo the 905R and im really torn on what to do.

i really cant get comfortable looking down at the 460cc head but i hit about 250 balls and if i had been on the course every one of them would have landed in the fairway. my current driver is a 975jvs and generally i can only carry it about 260-270. with the 905R, i was carrying 285+; longer and straighter is always a good thing.

i know ultimately i'll have to make the decision, but what would you guys do if you liked everything about a club except its aesthetics?

The aesthetics still appeal to you - it's not an FT-3, or a SQ, or any of the other weird drivers out there that really take adjusting. The aesthetics - the color, the shape, etc. - likely appeal to you. The size - the volume - simply doesn't.

I say you flip it around in your head. I say you embrace how weird the club looks to you as a reminder that this club, unlike your "normal" looking driver, is longer and straighter. Every time you set that weird looking club behind the ball, you'll think to yourself "oh yeah, my weird looking driver is unbeatable!" I've had to do that a few times, and it usually works pretty well. I can't do that with irons (largely because "weird looking" in irons usually always means "game improvement," which is a totally different class - you're still in the same class). With drivers, fairway woods, etc. it's the best thing I've found.

I bought one of the big head Cleveland Launchers and I just can't get use to the size of it. I went back to my Cubic Balance offset driver and it is serving me well. My son hits the Great Big Bertha Warbirds and kills it. He is out over 300 all the time and drives me up the wall. Every time I play with him I don't have the honors hardly at all and I over swing and mess up. I don't think it's the size of the head but the clubhead speed that really counts!

Semi-true statement if you hit the sweet spot every time.

I hate how many of my drives look when I'm not using a 460 cc driver. Which would bother you more?

yeah i know what you mean. driving is actually one of the better parts of my game and generally my shots with driver arent too far offline. im really starting to learn towards just buying it and seeing if i cant just get used to staring down at a much bigger head. if my memory serves me, the 975JVS is only 312cc? so needless to say 312 to 460 is quite a transition :] thanks for the opinions everyone

I bought the 400 Cleveland Launcher and the head looks to me to be too big at that size and I wonder if it causes the loss of some speed at impact? I seem to swing much faster and get the head thru the ball better with my Cubic Balance.

yeah, that would be quite a jump. I just recently went from a 975jvs to a 983k. For me it's working out great. Did demo some 460's (905r, SQ tour, r7), but like you, just didn't like the look. Decided on the 983 and have no regrets.

I played my first round yesterday with my R7 460. My previous driver was a TM 320. That's also quite a difference. I got over it pretty quickly, however as I hit drives longer and straighter than I have in the past. For me the biggest thing I had to get used to was the longer tees and teeing the ball higher. Visually, that was more challenging than the driver size. I'm willing to guess that once you buy a larger driver and hit it a bit, it'll become normal since you will then be used to the look of it. I really like hitting the ball longer and straighter

I know EXACTLY how you feel.. Yesterday I took the 905R with YS-6 Graphic Design out for demo... To make a long story short - HOLLY MOLLY !!!! I haven't hit anything that long before. If you look at my bag contents listed in my signature - you'll understand my dillema....

But then again - what are we thinking about? Extra 20 yds and straight ? I put the duct-tape over the Titleist logo, you put a blindfold over your eyes - and let's go and rip it! This club is amazing (granted, shaft has to be a fit - it didn't appeal to my with the V2 in it.... ) . GO FOR IT.

ragontona,

Even if you hit dead red center of the club face every time, that still may not hold true. Myself and every other player I've tested with the Callaway FT-3 consistently has 2-3 mph faster ball speed compared to ANY other driver on the market. Can you guess which one is in my bag? CoR or CT may be standardized, but engineers are a sneaky bunch, and Callaway's got this thing figured out.

I think it's much easier to get over the "look" of a driver than it's sound. I tried. I liked the trajectory and distance, but I'd need MANY more extra yards to deal with that fungo bat

Rafcin,

Do you have a clubmaker who is capable of hotmelting heads? My hotmelt toe weighted FT-3 sounds an awful lot like my R5 tour head.

Rafcin,

interesting... never thought of it. It could be a costly experiment though, I'm not sure my wife would tolerate another $300+ expense

If you get the okay, you can send me the head, and I will glady throw some in there for you in whatever orientation you desire.

The FT-3, and R7 family are all a snap since there is easy access to the inside of the head.

thanks for the offer, but I already sold my ft-3 couple weeks ago - additionally - I'll have to try the 905R again, just to make sure it was not a fluke, but right now I'm completly sold out on this club... It's very kind of you though, I appreciate it!

I have recently purchased the 905R. It is great and I would happily have paid double what I did for such a great club - and I paid retail!! I have my draw back, and the renewed confidence I have when stepping up to the tee is overwhelming. I previously had a 460cc Cleveland Launcher - which was good - but no comparison to the 905R. Titleist make the best clubs and balls - exception maybe Cleveland's wedges.

I would recommend the 905R to any relatively decent golfer.

    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
    • Please forgive the sweaty shirt.  Just got off the treadmill and decided to do my Evolvr drill.
    • I'd agree that 4w seems like the right play here. I'm not a course designer or anything but that hole looks like it could be so much more fun if everyone played from those front 2 tee boxes that are right outside your shot cone and they cut down most of the trees down that left side of the fairway. That would give risk reward to long hitters who want to try and push it up to that left fairway, allow more players to reach that second fairway, and still allowing it to be perfectly playable for someone who only hits driver like 150yds off the tee.   Yeah it looks like 4iron aimed at that inside edge of the right bunker is the play there, especially if you don't expect a 20mph tailwind again. If it is down wind again, 5iron would be just fine too, it'd still get you inside 150yds for your approach.  Keep in mind tee marker locations too, you measured that one from the back so if those tee markers are moved all the way towards the front of that box then 5 iron is probably best just to be sure that right bunker is never in play.
    • Day 1: worked on my drill for my arms.
    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
