Hi there,

As can be seen by my sig, as I am retooling my bag I have a gap. My 24.5* Ping G10 9 wood is my favorite club in the bag. With my glacially slow swing I get about 145 yards on average from it. My first iron is the G10 7 Iron which goes about 115 on average.

I suppose I have three choices.

Ideally I would bag something like a 29* 11 wood if I could find such a thing, as I love the 5W and 9W.

I suppose an iron with a similar loft would be a good choice for many, but I am not sure I'd hit it as good as a FW.

Many would put in a hybrid in the gap, but I have found that the Ping and Taylor made hybrids I have hit are banana slice machines for me.


Does anyone know of an older FW that has about 29 degrees that I can look for?

Can anyone suggest a really forgiving hybrid with similar loft which could fill that gap?

You could fill the gap with another club but another thought is to play your favorite fairway club and learn to take some distance off.

One way is to choke up on the club and take your regular swing, another method is to take a partial backswing and regular follow through or shorten follow through and the last method is too open up the club face and aim left of the target.

One benefit of partial shots is that you could try this for all your clubs and if you are hitting into the wind you can learn to keep shots low with more club and partial swings.

Believe it or not, I have learn to hit a partial swing driver into long par 3 into the wind or uphill and it is very reliable shot for me. I usually hit my driver about 250 - 270 yards and I can hit my driver into the wind 210 yards with a fade, draw or straight. I choke up on the club and depending on the distance take a partial backswing and a regular follow through.

I have found that hitting partial shots gives me more control with approach shots, so in summary the fact that you need to fill a distance gap could turn out to be advantage in the long run.

What about a hybrid club? Maybe like a 4, 5, or 6 hybrid (or combination of any)? These will surely give you more of a selection in terms of available lofts. They are also beneficial for gaining loft with slower swing speeds.

You might want to consider a hybrid instead of a fairway wood. You seem partial to Ping ... they have a G15 5-hybrid that is 27* or a 6-hybrid that is 31*. Why don't you take some swings with them and see what you think.
