I am looking for some golf lessons in the winter. The closest range to my place is Chelsea Piers and they offer lessons in the winter. The instructors seem kinda pricey but if they are good I wouldnt mind spending the money. Any one had lessons at Chelsea Piers? Any recommendations?

Marjorie Jones - Voted 2007 Northeast Section LPGA Teacher of the Year. Marjorie has played on tours worldwide, including 8 British Opens, 5 US Opens, winning numerous events such as the Australian Open. She is a member of the Women's Legends Tour, as well.

John Hobbins - John is a 26-year-member of the PGA of America. Before joining the Golf Club, John was the director of the Golf Digest Schools for 9 years. He has also been selected as one of the top teachers in the northeast by Golf Magazine and nominated for the Top 100 Teachers in America.

John Hobbins has experience teaching the 1 and 2 plane swing motions, the Stack and Tilt methodology, and more recently, Aimpoint technologies and the process of reading greens. He is a 26-year member of the PGA of America and can teach to any style that a student may prefer.

Here's a quote from one of his current students:

"There is a distinct difference between playing golf and playing it well. John has been helping me define this for over a year. His instruction is simple, logical, well explained and, most importantly, he continuously combines the latest innovations in technology into his methods. An avid fan of the sport, John is deeply knowledgeable, ever-pleasant and always full of interesting trivia. His instruction can, and will, take you to the next stage of your golf game - whatever your handicap." - Zaheen Mir

Let me know if I provide any other information!

I had a lesson with one of their better teachers. It was an ok experience. The tips and drills I got did help fix my golf swing. I thought the approach was a bit leadbetter like, take the club inside , place your left elbow here if that works for you. My personal opinion was that the instructors there are more concerned about the money than teaching their students. The guy teaching me kept looking at his watch and was turned off by the fact that I was only there for 30 minutes. I didn't feel a connection. Yes what he was saying made sense, but I like to establish a rapport with my instructor. Plus the rate are on the expensive side. If you dont have the time nor access to go outside the island than I think Chelsea piers is the only choice. But I wont be going back for another lesson there.

I'd say come out to Queens or the Island for some lesson since I'm sure you come out here to play anyways. I know many instructors in the area but haven't found the money or practice time to invest in one.

You're not limited to CP if you live in Manhattan. There's Randall's Island. It may be easier to get to if you live on the East Side, from there you can take a shuttle bus. In the winter, I'm not sure if the service is still available though.

If you go to CP, schedule a lesson when you're not looking into the sun, you can barely see the ball around sunset since the range is pretty much facing west, at least during the summer, not sure about winter. And sometimes it gets windy, you can't make anything out of the ball flight. Also, you can't hit driver on the top level and if you do, you can't see the flight past 200 yards since that's as far back as the fence goes.

Wife got me lessons there (CP) a couple of years ago for christmas. For the life of me, I can't remember the guys name, but I do remember he was very patient with me as I had just picked up the game.

I still suck, but that's for other reasons out of his control.

There's also this place: http://www.driveclubs.com/index.php

Not big on indoor lessons though, I'm guessing they use a simulator, but based on the web site, looks pricey.

Bumping this as I'm looking for instruction in the NYC area.  Anyone have any good feedback on anything in the area?  My transportation access is limited, so the closer to the city the better.

Thanks

Right, when I first saw that I went and checked their website, hes not listed as an instructor anymore.

http://www.chelseapiers.com/gc/academy/golf-pros.cfm

If anyone knows otherdfwise, please do let me know.

Edit: A quick google search revealed hes now at his own place in lower manhattan.

Anyone have any other experience with any of the instructors at the piers?

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).
