When your grips start to show wear marks, then it's time to get them replaced. Also, if you have a 7-iron or a PW you overpractice with, that grip may need to be replaced more often.
Good time to regrip is just after Christmas: lots of golf shops have specials then (grips + installation).
ALSO: If you eat candy bars while you play, you could get chocolate and other junk on your grips, which will attract sand and grass bits to the grip.
