I was playing yesterday, took a swing with a 7 iron and then got a intense pain in my right cheek..(try not to laugh) I had quit my round. I thought it was a pulled hamstring or something, but someone else i was talking to in the bar mentioned it might be a serious nerve issue. Im scurred. Anyone else have this happen to them while swinging a club?

Where in the buttock is the pain. High in the butt, Mid butt, Low butt.
Most common dx:
High butt--most likely SI joint pain
Mid butt--piriformis syndrome +/-sciatica
Low butt--proximal hamstring vs sciatica vs ischial bursitis.

For now, rest, ice, antiinflammatories (as long as there are no contraindications)

Sciatica is most commonly associated with a disc herniation compressing the L5 or S1 nerve roots.

However, if your pain stays in your butt (no back pain, no leg symptoms, no radiation to groin), I'd say piriformis syndrome is a probability.

If the pain is high butt and doesn't radiate it doesn't exclude disc herniation/sciatica, but makes it less likely.

My differential would include SI joint pain, glut medius pain, quadratus lumborum pain. lumbar facet pain.

The red flags for back/gluteul pain include bowel/bladder changes, groin numbness, progressive leg weakness or numbness, night sweats, persistent fever, weight loss.

You describe pain after swinging a 7 iron in the high butt (no radiation or other symptoms), thus, most likely musculoskeletal injury.

Give it three days of rest with ice 30minutes every couple of hours + antiinflammatories. If it's getting worse, symptoms change, or doesn't improve go see an MD. I'd recommend starting with PM+R (there are lots of good ones in NJ----Kessler is a top program)

I concur with some of you. I have a friend in San Francisco that suffers from the same problem from time to time. He wouldn't talk to me about it so I had to ask his boyfriend if he might know what the problem could be. He just smiled.

I have the same or similar issue.  Pretty much every time I play golf I pull a muscle in my right glut.  I'm right handed.  Any insight would be appreciated because I can't much much on the internet.  My guess is that my hip is to tight/flexed on my back swing or my swing is just totally screwed.

You just might need to sit on one of your balls 5-6 times a day to remedy the problem. http://paramountsportsrecovery.com.au/gluteus-medius/

Welcome to the forum @PhilTCU

A couple of things that may help.

Start doing hip stretches daily, especially after playing. Thread below discusses the stretches.

Second, use a foam roller on the hips, IT band and the glute.  I use it on my hips and IT before stretching. When you first start using this, it will be somewhat painful like a massage and a little sore the next day. But after a few days the pain will stop. It really helps loosen the tendons and muscles. Make it a routine for the next three months or more and you should see marked improvement.

    • This is pretty much how I look at it.  I understand there are times when the piece of mind has value. I think over the long haul I'm money ahead by never buying the extended warrantee. Hell, What do I know? I went to Ch!cago PubIic SchooIs.

    • On my car I got the extended power train warranty. I do read the fine print most of the time. Though at now 37, my eyes aren’t what they were 10 years ago.    The problem with most of these extended warranties on electronics and appliances is you don’t register the warranty with the place you buy the warranty from, which I’ve always found strange. Unless it’s GameStop then you know Alina drops her Switch in the next two years and the screen cracks they’ll replace it. No questions asked.    You buy a slow cooker at Walmart for $50 and the extended warranty is say $6, you have to go through a third party to register your product for the warranty, and it’s pretty damn annoying. Target is the same way. Anything you buy the extended protection on you have to go through a third party.    Why do retailers go through a “broker” for warranties? Because they don’t wanna deal with it? They make me talk to someone from another country, that I can barely understand, when I need my warranty fulfilled.   Sorry for the rant.
