I know that Pebble beach is a beautiful and great course, but is it really worth $500.00?

To me it's like the question- Is a BMW that sells for $50,000 really worth $500,000?

I think it's definintely worth it, but it would be really hard for me to drop $500.00 for a round of golf, I don't care how good the course is.

If I had $500.00 just laying around, then heck yea, I'd be playing it for sure. Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of money just laying around.

yeah... that's the thing. Right now I don't have the expendable income to justify $500 for a round of golf... but someday I will and when I do I will pay it. However, $500 is just about as much as I could justify regardless of the course (sure I might pay more for Augusta)... That being said... I think there are a handful of $100-$200 courses that are as stunning as Pebble and would be just as fun to play. I think it is all relevent... to a guy making six figures $500 is less significant than it would be to a college student or lower income person.

I think Pebble Beach is worth it... Visited there 10 years ago, at the time couldn't afford to play Pebble, played Pacific Grove instead... Promised myself that I would earn/save enough to go back and actually play Pebble... Fortunate to be able to take my dad to Pebble two years ago... Walking up 18 at Pebble with my dad is something I'll always cherish.

I'd be curious about the final cost - I thought they required that you stay in one of their hotels? Can anyone who played this year (I can still say that for a little while longer) comment?

I disagree. I truly love golf, but $495 is a lot of money to me. If my salary was twice what it is now, then I'd say it's worth it once. But the way things are right now, I wouldn't pay $495 to play any course. Not August, not St Andrews.. nothing.

500 bux is ridiculouse, but appartenly they are getting it. Everyone I've talked to who has golfed there said that Spy Glass was better and less expensive. However from a tradition stand point it hard to beat Pebble.

Not a chance in Hell. No course in the world is worth $500 for one round. If I ever paid that much for a round of golf, it would be because I bought it at a charity auction and most of the money is going to a worthy cause.

The only reason that it costs so much is that people are willing to believe that there is some mystique to Pebble Beach that makes it worth that much more than any other public course. It's just a golf course... a nice course to be sure, but in the end there are other courses just as nice for a lot less money. I can see the same sort of scenery elsewhere along the coast, and I can play golf elswhere for a lot less. Frankly, I'd just as soon split them up so that I can enjoy each in it's fullest.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to play Pebble, and I can afford to pay the price. I'm just not willing to do so for 5 hours of entertainment the like of which can be obtained for a much more reasonable price. Just my opinion.

I stayed at the Pebble Beach Lodge in July and played all their courses. You don't have to stay in one of the hotels, but if you don't it makes getting on the Pebble extremely difficult. If you don't stay, you can make a time 1 day in advance (if I remember right), but the course is almost always completely booked. For our July stay, I made my times in initially in February and then we tweaked things around as friends decided to join for the week, and we juggled time up until around end of May but by then the course was essentially fully booked. It is possible to sometimes just walk up as a single and get lucky.

You don't get much of a cost break by staying in the hotels either. Either way the green fee is $495, but if you stay a cart is included while if you're from elsewhere they charge separately for the cart.

As with the plentiful "Are Scotty Cameron Putters worth it?" threads, everyone has their own definition of "value" and "worth." FWIW, I also voted "no" in the poll because it's not worth it to me - but that could change in a year or a month.

In general terms, the right "worth" of anything is the highest amount of money people are willing to pay for that specific item, whatever it may be, without risking a decrease of its demand.

So, the question would be, is Pebble Beach packed year round even with a $500 green fee? Find that answer and you will find the answer to your query at the same time. Interestingly enough, maybe it would still be packed at 6 or even $700 a round...
