and I want to get her a set of used clubs. She has walked with me a few times - the first time I happened to shoot my best round ever - and she has expressed an interest in the game. I fully realize that she will need lessons and she understands she'll have to spend some time on the range before she plays much.

Since I don't know anything about women's clubs, I was wondering what Super Game Improvement clubs are good for women. Callaway, Ping? Possibly a setup like maybe 5-pw, 2 hybrids, 3 or 4 wood, and a putter? She is only 4'11" so I imagine we're going to need shorter shafts. I will most likely be piecing something together off e-bay and/or craigslist since it would be foolish to spend a fortune if she decides she doesn't want to stick with it. She does, however, like nice things and has already been eying a pink Rife putter.

That is per unshafted head. Don't be fooled by the smoke, mirrors and big money marketing of the OEM monsters. Hireko's components will stand up to any on the market and their customer service is great. The Ibellas are a tad on the fu fu side, but those XP Pros are some damn fine irons.

Dont make the mistake of many by trying to coach her. Your relationship will suffer a lot if you do.

Get some instructional DVDs on basics and maybe a lesson for her.

And let her ASK YOU questions on what shes doing wrong.

as for clubs when i looked at them for my wife there was no cheap ones around.

Yes, I def know better than trying to teach her. Not only am I unqualified to teach, but she wouldn't listen to me anyways. I figure, she can start out with a lesson a week and we and in between we can hit balls at the range. I just don't want her to get too discouraged. I'd probably have her start out with only a few clubs in the bag, but I'd leave that up to her instructor. I remember learning chipping and putting first. I don't know what they do these days. As for the clubs, I cam keeping my eye out. I'd be all for Mizunos, but she we'll need all the help she can get, and I didn't know Mizuno made the best game improvement irons.

I remember learning chipping and putting first.

My wife got interested in the game after a couples tourney using the scramble format. She had never played before. To my embarrassment, we used two of her drives... and I still get flack for it almost 6 months later. I mention this because hitting off a tee, putting and chipping were the easiest and most successful things she did to capture her interest (plus the encourage of my buddy's wife who played with her and let her use her clubs). That day, she was a using the the TaylorMade Ladies Burner HT or whatever their 13 or 14 degree high loft driver is called. I can't recall the irons. Lady somethings but they weren't one of the big names (I believe I saw them at Dick's). I recently purchased a very inexpensive ($30) Bettinardi C-01 mallet putter off Ebay.

Adams... one of the older A4OS or the like... perfect mix of hybrids, hybrid irons, and SGI/GI irons OR
some good components with a similar blended set.

Another biggie... get a 13-15* driver... much easier to hit.

for what it's worth my wife carries...
component 14* driver - $100
Cleveland Launcher 3W and 7W - $60
Cobra Baffler 4H and 5H - $100
Component irons 5-SW (similar to Nike slingshots) - $280
a cheapo putter - $35

so all said and done her set was about $575 not too bad...

We started with just the irons, driver, putter, and a few other hand-me-downs... then filled out her set with good woods and hybrids over the summer (3 yrs ago). She took a group lesson series and she was the only one in the group... costed about $125 for 4 45min lessons which usually lasted over an hour and had some video. After that I helped her along (which is OK if you do it right). I still help her, but only when she wants help and rarely on the course other than a small observation here or there. She loves the game and will likely play the rest of her life.

If you want to read about how I started her on the course I have lengthy posts on that... just do a search (from a while back)... this is probably the most important part about getting an SO to start golfing... how they are introduced to the game.

Find a local teaching pro, a woman would be best perhaps, to give her regular lessons. Learning how to do things right from the start will give her some quick improvement and that will encourage her to play more. The more she plays, the better she gets. The better she gets, the more you will be playing golf together. That is your goal I pressume. Doing this for my wife now. Bought her a set of Callaway Womens Big Berth i-brid irons. The 4,5,6, and 7 are i-brids (easier to hit) and the 8,9,PW, and SW are more "normal" but very much GI irons. Got her matching woods in "like new" condition (brand new with stickers) from the Callaway Preowned site. Put them in a matching blue/grey Callaway ORG 14 cart bag. Throw in a putter and you are done. The lessons are key though. I have her setting up three for this coming month with a good female instructor near home. With some decent equipment and some regular lessons, she will be on a path to success for sure. Take her out and buy her some golf shoes, matching outfits (for her, not you, ha ha), and some hats, you will be set. Women are easy man. You just have to make it seem like it is her idea to play golf, not yours.

Do keep in mind that while easy to coerce, women are highly intelligent. You buy her a bunch of cheap clubs and take her to the driving range, don't be surprised if her interest falls off sharply. Everyone is different in this regard, but I personally felt the best way to get my wife into golf was for her to see me giving her game/equipment/etc.. the same level of commitment that I give my own. For us, that meant me getting her a nice set of clubs and prepaying for some lessons with a quality instructor. Got her the clubs, shoes, lessons, etc.. for Christmas. She has never swung a club, but is already taking an interest in the game. Just yesterday she is watching golf on tv with some enthusiasm (a first). Lucas Glover is putting for par in Hawaii the other day, he misses, she yells out "Oh, no!". That never happened before:)

Not sure if this would be an option for you but are there any decent par 3 courses in your area? She might be more comfortable playing a course like that; and if its a decent course the yardages will vary so you can get a good workout with mostly all your irons. That's how most of the women I know learned how to play. Otherwise lessons and a nice set of irons that she feels confident with would be a great place to start.

There have been many good suggestions here, but I submit that it will be an enormous amount of work, patience, and money to properly get your girlfriend equipped, trained, and motivated. Instead, I suggest simply finding a new girlfriend who already likes golf. Much easier, and you stand a much better chance of success (on the golf part at least). But if you insist on keeping your current model and going through this ordeal, you have my best wishes.

My girlfriend has repeatedly asked me to take her golfing, to which I reply, "Man's game, honey." That is usually followed by a dirty look and few minutes of silence. I did however say she could drive my golf cart and fetch me and my friends beer if she feels so inclined.
