At the course I was playing the other day, there was an incident where a golf bag and equipment was stolen. The poor guy said that he left his bag with clubs/ball etc, in the bag drop area, then went in to the office to pay the green fee; when he came back to the bag drop, it was gone. His equipment was worth over 2 thousand dollars . He was trying to get the course managment to pay for his clubs but the course is not responsible for the clubs-you play at your own risk.

I over heard this because I was comming to play, and I was going to put my bag at the bag drop area and go pay the fee, like I've done before. I reconsidered and carried my bag with me to pay the green fee. I really don't know what I would do if my equipment was stolen.

The course I played is a muni course, not too far from a urban area. One that I don't play often, and probably will never again, since a guy was also robbed a few months ago.

So if you want the excitment of golf in nyc, bring a kevlar golf shirt!, and make sure your homeowners insurance is paid up.

That is ridiculous!!!! I would be past the point of pissed off and that is too say the least...

And if it took them years to save up? Or they were a gift? Or or or? That's a pretty silly statement, Indian.

I play primarily at "better" courses, and certainly at my home CC I don't have to worry about theft. But the few times I play at a muni or an unfamiliar course, I don't let my clubs out of my sight. Plus, my keys are usually in my bag - my phone, my camera...

I agree, just because they cost 2k doesn't mean he can afford to buy new ones. You never know how much he had to beg borrow and deal to get that set, which 2k is pretty easy to spend on a full set of clubs.

I usually try to keep an eye on them, in my trunk or near my playing partners. I never hear about theft where I play but it has to happen and I don't want it to be me.

I'm not a rich guy, but I just added up what I have in my bag and it comes to a $2,660 investment. It does not take long to run up the value when you figure the set of irons alone cost $1,000. Add a driver, fairway metals, wedges, Wynn grips, putter, range finder... you get the idea.

The point certainly is not whether you can afford to replace the gear. The point is that you have to keep an eye on it. Most people could not tell you what they have invested in thier bag and would probably underestimate it.

I'm glad we have another politically correct member on this forum beside me

$2K is not much...irons = $700,wedges = $300,putter = $150,fwy woods = $600,driver = $400, bag = $100 ,here is $2250 in my bag... I always have the rain hood on my clubs, until I start playing. Less temptation, urban area or not "no-name" head covers do very well too...

Even at better courses you need to exercize some caution. Where better to find clubs with a higher resale/pawn value than a nice golf course? I rarely leave my bag unattended. And yes, it would well over $2k to replace the contents (not to mention the bag itself).

I try not to let my clubs out of sight at an unfamiliar couse too. I am conscious of it because it is such a big problem in my line of work, snowboarding. There you have board and binding combos, like mine, that cost about $800 and there are tons of teenage boys around who want that really badly, so they get stolen alot. I always take mine inside the lodge with me, right past the "No skis or snowboards inside" sign, even in to the bathroom!! That is harder to do with a bag of clubs. But leaving them near a window where you can see them is not a bad idea.

I once had a guy in my own foursome steal a club from me. This guy was a first class piece of shit. We get on the tee box on a par 3. We are all walking so I leave my bag at the bottom of the hill like the rest of the group and bring two clubs to the tee, a GW (Old Tommy Armour GW)and PW. I rest the GW on the ground and hit the PW. As soon as I hit the sprinklers turn on causing me to run towards the hill, leaving my GW on the tee. Mind you this is the fourth hole now. We get to the 12th and Im about 115 out. I go for my GW and its not there. Im like shit and I remember I left it on the fourth tee box. I go to the group behind me and ask if they found it and they say no. Now, mind you the whole time we are playing I notice that a guy in my group (the thief well call him forward) keeps taking the same club out of his hand and just making practice swings with it while other people are hitting. I walk over and realize that this is 100% my club. I ask him, hey where did you get that club. He says "I dont know." I said that looks like the club that I left on the fourth hole on the tee box, that is my club. And he replies "No its not" So I said without looking at it what kind of club is it, and the piece of shit didnt even know. I asked how much did you pay for it and he again says I dont know. So without ruining the other guys games I told him that we had to chat after the round. Now fast forwarding this guy knows that Im a police officer and I happen to work in the same town that this piece of shit lives in so I have to be careful on what I say to him, for my own sake. So the round ends and I tell him straight up "Listen that is my club you found it on the fourth hole and you know it and I know it." So he starts with "Oh your accusing me of stealing now." and I say flat out "Yeah your a ****ing thief." To make a long story short he brought up my job and how now he thinks im gonna tell the guys in my department what happened and they are gonna hammer him with tickets. So I decided to just call him the biggest piece of ****ing shit that I have ever come across and cut my losses. Horrible story. This GW was about three years old with probably over 200 rounds played with it let alone hitting the driving range, and the guy has the balls to tell me that he bought it recently. Then he started to panic and ask me if my club had the shaft label on it that said True Temper. I said all of them have that you ****ing *******. Anyway so thats my story. Whats funny is that this guy would come into headquarters every day to get the key to a library in town (civilians would have to sign the key out at headquarters) and he hasnt been back once since then and this occurred last year.

Finn, I usually have only bad things to say about small-town cops, we have few aholes here, that I could tell you stories about but I think you reacted proper way. 3 yr old wedge ain't worth more trouble than that.
I've cute little address lables on every on my club (look around on the net, it's like $10 or so) - they're REALLY hard to get off the shaft... that would've taken care of this incident w/o doubts.... because remember - one is innocent until proven guilty

Raf, coming from where you live (NJ) the state troopers are extremely tough. Getting back to the original thread I would have been one pissed off person if someone stole my whole bag of clubs, whether they were a beginner set or worth $2,000. Just remember what goes around comes around and that scumbag hopefully will get his someday.

I think this only applies if you believe in the afterlife (in whatever form), because I've seen enough *******s die happy and wealthy that I've stopped buying it.

I must repeat what several others have said, My clubs and bag are worth over $2000 retail and that doesn't even count the $300 rangefinder in it. If they were stolen I would not be able to replace them for some time. That is why I never let them out of my sight. I never use bag drops, not even at the nice upscale courses I play. Working at a muni, I have seen more than a few people come in mad because someone has ripped off their clubs. Although I feel for them because it sucks that nothing is safe, I also can't help thinking they were stupid for leaving them unattended in the first place. The only way to make sure you never get your clubs stolen is by keeping them with you or securely locked up at all times.

True, but thats real sad that it should have to be that way. Your there to play a game and to even have to worry about someone stealing your clubs is sickening. But its the way it is I guess.

I've worked at a private course for 3 years now and we've only had one incident remotely close to this from what i recall...

...it was my first year there and i was working during the opening round of the annual Invitational, which is the biggest tournament up there.

It was sometime in the afternoon and we were setting up for the round, putting the bags on the carts and whatnot, and since its a private course the members are able to store their bags there. so a guy comes in and asks if i can get his clubs...naturally, being the amazing employee that i am, i say sure and go look for them. they arnt in the bag storage so i tell him he must have them or they are already on a cart so i help him look and they arnt. i ask him if he has them and he says no and starts to look himself. then as he cant find them, he starts a ruckus and is telling the pro, my boss, that i stole them or took them so he couldnt play. meanwhile im in the background thinking this guy has lost it. he then starts telling me i need to get him new ones ASAP and starts yelling at me to get his clubs, the joke's over, etc. then he put his hand on my collar and i push him off of me (thats a whole different story) but i, as stated above, being professional, asked him for the keys to his car. he tells me they arn't in there and so i said lets go see, its at least worth a look...

can anyone guess the ending to this one? SHOCKER, they're in the trunk. but it doesnt stop there. guess who was accused of putting them there? SHOCKER it was ME! haha it was insane, but *******s will pollute this place we call home forever so you learn to deal with it...i figured maybe the guy was going through something, it wasnt old age because he was 45 at most.
i think he just didnt like the idea of being responsable for being a dumbass haha

We just had a report here at a nice course, two people went into the grill at the turn and came out to find the cart gone and clubs stolen. Another attendant at another course told me there are thieves all over checking out the parking lots of courses and if the clubs go unattended, they are gone. Never leave your clubs unattended at any course as the course owners take no responsibilty for the loss.

then he put his hand on my collar and i push him off of me (thats a whole different story)

Does anybody else want to hear this story? Or is it just me? Anyway, just to second, third, whatever everyone else said. My clubs, bag, gloves, etc. come out well over $2000. If my bag were to vanish I would be looking at a relatively large insurance claim and a $500 deductable. Not something my wife would be too happy about. I would probably have to figure out what to go without while I'm comming up with the extra $500. Somthing else that I would face is that at 6'8" my clubs are longer and more upright than standard. I would have to get fitted and order a new set. Between that and waiting for an insurance check can mean weeks, if not months before I'm playing again. One problem with the course I play is that you have to go inside to pay and if there is a line, you can go several minutes without seeing your clubs. Needless to say it only takes a few seconds.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
