Directors are in a million+ debt and the course is in disrepair.
Course will be closed by the end of next month...

Will have to find a new one.

Is this a public course run by a management company or a private club? That's a shame either way... Hope you can find a course to play... I can't remember a course just shutting down completely here in the Metroplex

We had a course close a bit further south of me in an area called Cape Coral, it was all over the news about the residents who lived on the course were peeed off because a developer had put in a bid to buy the course and build houses on it which would destroy their property values even further.

That was about 18-24 months ago but the news dried up on it and I don't know whether the developer got his planning permission.

We have quite a few courses on the Illinois side near St. Louis. Greens fees are a good deal because of the recession - short term at least.

A couple of the courses with serious engineering/design flaws on some of the holes may end up getting plowed under - would take big $$ to fix, and with excess capacity in courses in area might not be worth it. Also, four 9-hole operations in region have shut down since 2002 - these were mom and pop operations where the operators wanted to retire - and could get more $$ for land as subdivision.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

yup. florence country club (the course Stewart Cink grew up playing on) is going to be closed completely in the next coming months. the city bought it out and they are going to make a landfill out of the land...

it sucks that a home course of the open champion is about to become a dump... but i hated that place anyway....

Last year a 36 hole course near me went belly up and was going to close. Luckily they built a bunch of million dollar homes around it so the county bought half of it and made them switch management companies. The sad thing was it was only open for 2 or 3 years before all this happened.

There are two courses near where I used to live in Houston that have gone under recently.

One of them was a bit before the recession hit; the course (Treeline GC) had been in the area for over 50 years, before really anything else was out there except for a bunch of pine trees. The land was sold off to build a neighborhood full of "custom" homes that all look the same. The course really wasn't that great compared ot others in the area, but it was dirt cheap by comparison and always fun to play.

The other course (Raveneaux CC) that closed down didn't close completely but instead let 18 of its 36 holes go to seed. The "Old" course was originally built when the club formed 40 years ago, and after that they built the "New" course. When they were strapped for cash, they decided to keep the Old course and let the New course go. Directly across the street from the club house and the New course are about a dozen homes each worth well over a million dollars. Many of the home owners bought/built their home there so they'd be across the street form the golf course; now all they have a view of is an overgrown field. The county has recently stepped in and said they'd buy the New course and then lease 9 holes back to the club and turn the other 9 holes into a park.

Quail Hollow, just north of Tampa, closed down a little over a year ago. It was the first place I ever played. It's pretty sentimental to my dad since he had tied the course record there and had an ace. I played there shortly before it closed and it was in absolute disrepair. Most of the fairway grass had died and the greens were looked like the rough. A real shame since it was a nice place at one point.

A private course that has been in my community forever now has just closed down. The recession really hurt them these past 2 years. It's a shame, they'd rather close than go public because they would get so much more business as public.
