Anyone excited for Leopard? I have 10.4.7 on my G5 and 10.3.9 on my PowerBook and am looking forward to the new update. The two big additions (Time Machine and Spaces) look great. I know it will still be awhile until it comes out (Spring 2007), but the sneak peak on apple.com has got me looking forward to it. So mac users, what are you running now and are you looking forward to the new OS?

I used to work for Apple, develop software for Mac OS X, and more, so I'm looking forward to much of it. Time Machine and Spaces are great. I'm considering a new Mac Pro as well, though I'm hesitant to get a v1 machine when v2 may come out around the same time as Leopard itself.

Incidentally, you probably already know about Scorecard for Mac OS X, but if you don't, check http://cynicalpeak.com and buy a copy.

The Mac Pro is very slick, but the MacBook Pro is what I have my eyes on for my next computer, as I am a college student. I'm interested on how much of a difference the Intel chip creates. You say you used to work for Apple, how long ago was that, and have you dealt with either the Mac Pro or MacBook Pro before? If so, is there an obvious difference in speed?

Also, I looked at Scorecard for OS X awhile back. It looked impressive as I am a stat junky in every sport, but I don't think my golf game is consistent or good enough to properly utilize it. Once I improve enough to be somewhat consistent on the course, I will definitely consider it.

Huh? I realize that mileage may vary but I was exclusively a windows user for years and have found Macs to be a refreshing change from the uneccesary complexity of the Windows world. I became and still am good at finding my way around Windows and making things work but I don't ever want to go back.

For my money Macs are so much easier, intuitive, and enjoyable to use. I'm only mildly trying to start a fight. Just my 2 cents.

Macs are tuned up like sports cars out of the box. Less fuss, more fun.

Macs are, on average,

less expensive than comparably featured Windows boxes, they last longer , they fetch a higher resale value, and they run a far more powerful OS (with Unix beneath it), can run Windows and Linux if you really need them to. They also have "Software Update"... but don't need to update the OS every third day to patch yet another vulnerability. The whole thing about "no real viruses for the Mac" are still true. Compared to the thousands for the PC... And guess what? IBM designed and created the chip inside of Jeff's Mac (as well as the two inside my tower). Don't bother responding. In fact, don't, period. I have very little patience for ignorance this morning.

At the same time, charting your rounds now will show you the areas in which you most need to improve, as well as to let you chart your progress.

Erik, i really cant stand how childlike you are...your what? a twentysomething little geek who hides behind a computer screen all day looking to call people like me names like ignorant boobs? i think you have a lot of issues man.

anyways, i didnt say it was a mac-pc debate, i was stating that i dont like the mac computer...the operating system is garbage to me...windows is easy to manage and its got more to it in my opinion...

which is exactly that, my opinion...i have used macs before and i dont like them...so get off my nuts alright? haha people need to just chill out...this is some f**kin forum you got going here erik, full of uptight people who dont like a little off digression

"THIS THREAD IS CALLED MAC USERS! YOU USE WINDOWS! AHHH IM BEING RETARDED! GO AWAY GO AWAY!"

CHILL OUT PEOPLE...i dont care if nobody sides with me on this, its my opinion that macs blow, it doesnt mean you have to jump on me for it...get a LIFE

Is it too much to ask for to have a Mac topic where no posts bash the OS? I understand it is your opinion that PCs are superior to Macs, and I respect that. But to come into a Mac user topic, sh!t on Mac's in general, and then get defensive by telling me to "get a life" seems quiet skewed. You chose to come into a Mac topic, expressed you hatred for Macs, and then backed up by playing the “opinion” card. Come on man, we comprehend that you think PCs are superior, and that opinion is totally reasonable, but don’t come into a Mac topic expecting people to side with your opinions when you decide to go on a delusional anti-Mac rampage.

Thanks for letting me try out the new "infraction" feature in vBulletin 3.6.0. I was hoping someone would volunteer.

i was stating that i dont like the mac computer

Nobody asked you.

the operating system is garbage to me

Nobody cares what an uninformed person has to say. But again, thank you for volunteering to try out the new "infraction" system. It's cool. You've even got a little "red flag" under your post now.

Erik,
Thanks for the link to your software. I checked it out and was about to pull the trigger; yet I run Mac OS 10.3.9. I guess I will eventually buy a Mac Book and get with the current OS; right now my 10.3.9 serves me well. I think "Tiger" would really slow my system...older iBook.

I read on your blog that making the software work with Panther would change the functionality.

Thanks.

Erik,

Yeah, it uses "CoreData," a developer functionality that isn't included in 10.3.x.

If you have enough RAM in the iBook, 10.3 and 10.4 will run at about the same speed.

Wow.

Is it just me or did this escalate way beyond the bounds of a hearty debate? Actually, I am quite "chilled." I happen to disagree with your opinion about the Mac user experience and I don't disrespect you for being a Windows user. I use a Windows machine every day at work (would love to replace it with a Mac) but it gets the job done well most of the time. I was pleased when Microsoft released the XP operating system because previous versions had been an absolute disaster. Windows has come a long way but as a long time Windows user I still prefer Macs many reasons:
  • Rock solid security out of the box. Virus protection is unecessary. No need to spend $30 a year on Norton.
  • Unparalleled stability (XP comes close). BTW, my buddy, who works with Windows Vista at Intel says Vista's release was pushed back because it was a crash machine. They are trying to resolve the problems for release.
  • Simplicity. What takes 5 steps in Windows often takes two or one in a Mac. At least it feels that way. Mac OS X gets out of the way and lets you get stuff done. As funny as it sounds this was one of the things that threw me off with a Mac… it was so easy to use and as a long time Windows user I expeted it to be harder to operate. It isn't.
  • Exposé - the greatest way to multi-task. It looks outstanding, is extremely time efficient, and reminds me of the computer they used in Minority Report.
  • Solid warrenty coverage from Apple. My logic board croaked a few months ago and Apple replaced it free of charge. Nice. BTW, my warranty had expired.
  • I don't have to talk to some guy in Indian who can barely speak if I need tech support.
  • Beauty. These machines look as good as they perform. I can relax when I use my Mac.
  • Plug it in and it works. You're not going to be searching for drivers like you do in Windows. A good example would be the four (yes 4) hours we spent with a computer tech setting up a Windows network in my parents home on Saturday. If it was a Mac we would have turned on the computers and router, set a wireless password, and it would have worked. End of story.
So, I don't think you are a boob for using Windows but I don't think you've given any substantive reasons to explain why they are better than Windows apart from saying that Macs are crap. I posted this at a previous blog of mine: Sheer Computing Bliss . BTW, I'm really looking forward to the new Mac OS. I think they've added some great stuff. Wasn't that what we were originally talking about?

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
