When do you find weather makes going to the range unproductive?

I questioned the wisdom of going to the range today. It was below freezing, high 20s, the wind was blowing left and against, 10-20mph and the heater was not helpful (read off). Barely felt my fingers after awhile. Can you have as productive a session compared to normal weather in such conditions?

Depends on the facilities, but I would say generally, no. As you mentioned, cold hands, not a perfect grip. The body is cold and not moving as well as it does when you are warm. With all the external factors, it's harder to focus on the swing.

I won't say it's counterproductive, but for my part at least, definitely not as productive as practice in better weather. The temperature doesn't matter that much, it's the wind I don't like. If it's cold, but not raining, snowing or blowing, it's just a matter of keeping warm. Wool closest to the body goes a long way. Take breaks every now and then, keeping the hands moving to keep them warm.

If it's really windy, I'll just practice putting and chipping.

I use the cold steel rule - If I can feel the cold steel of my wedge shaft through the grip and the golf glove, it's too cold to play or practice.

If it's too cold, my hands become stiff and any noticeable stiffness detracts from the usefulness and quality of my practice. If I can't grip the club and move my body like I normally would, I benefit only slightly from the practice.

Today it was 45 degrees minus a couple MPH of wind chill, and when I went outside I decided against going to the range. I'd have to say that 50 is probably my cut off. I know, I'm kind of a wimp.

Where in Texas? North of Dallas, where I am, isn't pleasant. Not abominable, but not pleasant.

When the temps are in the sigle digits, I seriously reconsider going to the range. Back in January I went to the range one Sunday morning and the temp was about 5* and even with overhead space heaters at the range, I will still so cold that my hands were numb and it literally hurt to hit the ball. It wasnt much fun and I found that I was so looking foreward to just finishing up and going back inside where it was warm that I could really focus on my swing.

I went yesterday and it was just at 30F. The heaters helped, but I also wore Mizuno cold weather gloves and worked just on wedges and easy iron play. the gloves worked pretty good and my hands were not cold. It was windy, but I worked on using the wind with my shots.

went last week after a 'minor' snow storm to the range...no wind, heater was on and was comfortable...but realizing when you hit the ball into white oblivion, other than ball flights and alignment and whatnot...pretty useless.

I try to make the best of it. Instead of hitting my driver into the white oblivion I work on my short irons and wedges. The range where I go has a practice green 55 yds from the tee and another 88 yds from the tee. I practice with my sand and lob wedges, seeing how close I can land the ball to those flags. Doesn't matter if the greens are covered in snow because I'm working on carry distance and trajectory. If anything it helps me because the snow forces me to work on scoring clubs instead of spending so much time hitting the long ball.

I completely agree and i did do for most of the 150 balls in the bucket...most were honestly using my 60, 54 and pw/aw with every kind of 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 swing i could think of, draws/fades (not much since they're wedges) low flight, lobs, etc. Hardly any were long balls, only to get a few outta the system and change it up a bit. Irons were more for alignment and ball flight, neglecting distances.

If it's really cold, like I'm cold under 3 layers of clothes, then I'll just practice my short game shots (inside 50 yards) if I'm out there.

Regardless of of how hot or cold it is, i find strong cross winds (20-30mph or so) useless for practice. Same thing for downwind. The only strong wind i find useful for practice is when its coming strait at you.

I avoid hitting downwind on the range and look for chances to hit into the wind. As far as temperature requirements.... that depends on how high my level of up north cabin fever is. If I'm uncomfortable and looking to finish the bucket up quick then it's probably not a productive range session. I do like playing in most any condition as it teaches you how to improvise.

Unproductive? That's a tough one.
I try and avoid going to my favorite range at the time of day when the sun's angle makes it tough to follow the ball; or when high winds make ball flight too radical... But I'll still go! Even if all I do is work on my ball striking, or get a workout; only severe heat and humidity (my local range has awesome heaters) will have a chance of keeping me away.

    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.
    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
