Yesterday during the Pebble Beach Pro-Am it was mentioned that JB Holmes played on the high school golf team when he was in 3rd grade. How the heck does that work? Would he have continued to play on it every year until he graduated, or is there limited eligibility (like college)? Is golf a special case, or could, say, a knee-high phenom pitcher play on his HS baseball team?

At my school, it is like college where a student-athlete has four years of varsity eligibility. Perhaps J.B. Holmes was considered a member of the Junior Varsity team and therefore did not count towards any of his legal eligibility years. All in all, they probably found some loop hole around it so that he could play on the team, but he probably did not compete in the actual matches until he was in the ninth grade.

P.S. That was a sick hole out he had yesterday in the Pro-am.

As fas as I know there is no time limit on high-school eligibility assuming you haven't yet graduated. It's not uncommon to see middle school kids playing at the varsity level in sports such as golf, swimming, tennis etc. 3rd grade is a little extreme, but if he had the ability go for it.

My sister played on the varsity boys team last season when she was in middle school, and she will be on the team till she graduates I would imagine. I think in a sport like golf where it is such an individual thing and the risk of injury is minimum due to your physique there shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps in team sports where injury may occur they hold back the younger phenoms due to safety concerns is all I can think of. I know here in MA you have to be under a certain age to compete in the MIAA events (yea the 23yr olds trying to play high school soccer is hilarious). Also you can obtain a wavier for age and other things from the MIAA (governing body for school sports here) which a few of the kids on the soccer team had to do for age reasons.

I guess it depends on where you live, because here, there is a 4 year eligibility on Varsity sports. There was actually a team disqualified from the district championships a few years ago, because one of their players was on his 5th year on the Varsity team. They worked hard to get there, and were booted out because of it.

In Tennessee there is no limit to how many years you can play for your high school team, BUT, you must go to school in the same building as the high schoolers. My school was 9-12 and our biggest rival was 7-12th grade, so they had a larger pool of talent that could participate in high school athletics. Was a bum deal because our middle school was right next door to the high school, but since the 7th and 8th graders were not physically in the same building we could not use them on any varsity teams, where as our rival school could.

In Florida you can only play a HS Sport for 4 years. No middle schoolers can play....maybe practice, but not compete.

A school team, regardless of the level of school and regardless of the sport should only be comprised of students who actually attend that school in my ever so humble opinion.

If my memory serves me well I believe he was the number one player on the team in 6th grade.

Did he go to the high school of no-sporting athletes...like come on...a 6th grader being the number one player on the team...doesn't that seem a little ridiculous? If I was in high school and a grade 6er was our #1 player I would be extremely ashamed. Was the league playing on pitch and putt courses!? How old are you in grade 6? 12 years old? How could he possibly hit it as long as a 16 year old? I am sure it's true but there has to be something behind it.

Usually there is no limit on the years you can play. I imagine that it was a sort of low-key team, and they didn't have much talent. Maybe they played in a bad league, where the competition and the rules were a little relaxed.

It's not so much the distance but the control from 150 in for younger golfers. My sis plays on the boys team, she can only drive the ball around 220 max, but can stick greens from 150 in with quite good accuracy which drives the boys nuts. Last year was her first year at age 12 she was either 1st or 2nd for most of the year shooting 40 or below for most 9 hole tourneys (w/e tees they play i dunno, blue or black prob). It's not like high school kids are consistently firing scores of 4 under a 9 anyways. If you can play at a young age why not challenge yourself with some good competition? Apart from us kids golf, which prob wasnt very big (or even in exsistance) when jb was a kid what were his other options? He did start playing on the pepsi junior golf tour in hs, so maybe he left hs comps at that point?

See that makes sense but then there are private schools where I live that go from K-12th grade. So they can have younger kids playing.

Also, I remember hearing about this 8th grade running back who is starting somewhere and already has college coaches drooling (his dad was a famous RB i just can't remember the name)

It's different depending on where you live. I grew up in Ohio and only grades 9-12 could play on the high school JV or Varsity teams. It's different in Kentucky. OJ Mayo was playing on his high school team in 7th grade (in Kentucky) and if I'm not mistaken, when he transferred to North College Hill in Cincinnati, there were eligibility concerns for him as the rules are different in Ohio for how many years you can play high school sports. Of course they worked out the rules considering he was the best player in the state. ;)

    • I agree with @pganapathy about removing some clubs. I would recommend removing the 2, 3, 4 and 5 irons for now. Play with Driver 3W 5W 3H 5H 6 iron 7 iron 8 iron 9 iron PW ( you don’t have listed) 52 56 Putter Th 60 wedge can be difficult for new players, but you could keep that If your 3H is adjustable, increased the loft to be more like a 4H. Play with these on course and see if you can get a feel of the actual yardages for each club and especially the gaps between them. It may take 10 or more rounds. A par 3 course is helpful for determining the gaps in the irons and some woods too. A device like a Shot Scope H4 can really help give you your actual yardage on course.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
