Normally they don't show guys smoking on TV but I've seen it twice this weekend. They showed John Daly smoking during Saturdays round & they showed Nick Price smoking today on the Champions tour.

Is TV/Golf relaxing this standard or is this just some bad TV work?

It's not something you'll see much of either on tv or even in casual rounds with average Joes.

It is amazing to me, a guy who grew up in the tobacco states. The whole industry has been turned upside down from my adolescent years through adulthood.

US broadcasts typically try to avoid those smoking shots - when I watch the Euro tour, they have less of a hang-up, and you tend to see it more often.

Cabrerra at the US Open in 2007 was puffing away like crazy, but it seemed that he hid the butt in his palm...

I thought it was a little weird when i saw an ad for the John Daly reality show that was just him smoking. What exactly were they trying to say about Daly?

I don't see how this would be "bad TV work". It's not like their smoking illegal substances, or they're under 18.

Its not neccisarily bad TV work, its just that the networks kinda view it as irresponsible to show that kind of thing. Its not illegal, youre exactly right, but showing any tobacco products is a little "edgy" for today's mainstream media. Think about how many TRUTH adds you see out there now. And this is coming from someone who grew up with a dad who had the Marlboro red windbreaker from being a VALUED customer, and im in the south. Its a personal choice, but think about how many soccer moms you know that would just lay down and cry if thier little baby saw someone doing THAT on TV. Its just the networks dont want to get into that.

Tune into "24" on Monday and watch Jack Bauer throw knives in peoples throat, or saw off their hands, or someone shoot another dude in the head assasination style. or watch "CSI" and watch people get bludgeoned to death, stabbed, thrown into a garbage can and left to rot.....

But dammit, no smoking on TV!!

I haven't seen it on the PGA telecasts, but I see Langer with his cigar on the Champions Tour often. I really don't see what's wrong or irresponsible. There are a lot of things that are, in my opinion, worse that showing someone smoking.

I like to enjoy a nice cigar during a round of golf.....as long as you ask your playing partners and avoid blowing smoke in peoples faces, I don't get it......unfortunately, the PC police have deemed smoking bad for golf, hence it's hidden....kinda rediculous....someone made a good analogy regarding violence on TV, but God forbid you see someone smoking playing golf....

I love how you can turn on any law and order and see a bloody dead hooker whos been raped all over yet people get all up in arms about someone smoking or drinking on tv.

I dont know I guess I disagree a bit. I think it just sends out the wrong message, especially during sport broadcast where its live. I understand people smoke its a daily thing everyone has seen someone smoke but still on a live broadcast, its just bad taste, if the player cant withold himself from smoking during a television event then try at least not to televise him live when hes walking to his ball. My opinion its not to slander any smokers out there.

Agreed. I don't have to agree with you, but as long as you are not breaking laws/putting people in danger it isn't really my business.

What a difference 50 years makes. Back in the 50's and 60's smoking during early telecasts were cliche.

I used to smoke at burger king after my #1, super sized. In tin foil ashtrays.

Gone are the good old days! I have actually quit smoking (for the most part) but I dont care one bit if your smoking on tv, next to me in the cart, blowing in my face....

This country is getting all crazy. Socialism is next, Singapore anyone??
