In this month's golf digest, Jack's #1 lifetime principle is "head position, steady and behind the ball" and Jim Flick comments that "a steady head helps create a consistent bottom of the swing arc and angle of approach for each club." I've been working on keeping a steady head for the past couple of years and have been using a product called steady-head (bought it on ebay) and it actually works quite well. Is anyone else out there have any tips on keeping a steady head?

I'm not, but, if its a swing thought that Jack Nicklaus endorses. His #1 principle of all things. Hey, it can't bad too bad to give a shot. It certainly sounds like a great golf credo.

Head position is important, but Jack's head was moving a lot. He's always been known for playing the ball off his left heel. On the picture below however, you see his head and shoulders moving laterally towards the ball with every club but the driver. With the hit-up-on-the-ball analogy on the driver, this makes sense. Ball in the same position, you'd have to do something different in order to hit up with one club and 3-4 inches further forward with the next.

His head was always behind the ball, but not particulary steady. Funny that Jim Flick should say "a steady head helps create a consistent bottom of the swing arc and angle of approach for each club.", when Jack moved his head forward because it helped him create a consistent bottom in front of the ball.
