This weekend a few of my buddies and I played a couple rounds and in the second round we decided to play a slightly different variety of golf than usual. Its a work in progress and we hope to have the rules hammered out by summertime, but basically we played teams of 2, low score wins the hole with the second score as the tiebreaker, but here's the kicker...each person must THROW the ball 3 times and it does not count as a stroke.

That is what we went with on the front nine, 3 throws a person, back nine we decided to go with 3 individual throws a person and 3 team throws to add more throwing on each hole. Safe to say it got tough at times keeping track of who used how many throws and what not, but it definitely made for some good laughs and an added challenge. I used my first throw (a fantastic throw to say the least) to get out of some serious tree trouble and back in the fairway leading to a "birdie" and a win of the hole somehow. The other team did a pretty good job of using their throws from bunkers or hard chips where they were shortsided, sometimes going with the underhand lob instead of the overhead baseball throw, great strategy. Other times we saved the throw for the green, throwing it in the hole from a few feet away to win or tie a hole. However, that's where some rule changes need to be made because we ended up just dropping the ball in hole a few times kinda defeating the purpose of throw golf.

Any suggestions for changes? We thought either no throws from inside 5 feet or just no throws on the green period. I'd kinda like to keep throws allowed from at least 10 feet away, keeping it interesting at times when a beer pong type throw could come in handy, but thats just me. You guys plan any games that are incredibly fun like this, or a variety that you can still be good at after a few drinks?

LMAO, I like the creativity....

IMHO, 1 throw per hole instead of 3........it adds some serious decision making, 3 seems like a lot and 1 will be easier to keep track of....also, like your idea of no throws from inside 5 feet......to make it simple, you might just go with no throws within the length of your putter to the hole....

I play match play up to 17 holes and double and nothing on the final hole. The key is to find someone equal or better than you are so that they help elevate your game.

It is interesting, but how about making it harder and only getting 1 throw per hole, per team....?

I think this idea is awesome. I read the description as meaning 3 throws per person total on the front 9 (so total 6 throws per team over 9 holes), and 3 throws per person, plus 3 team throws, total, not per hole, over the back nine. I like that more than 3 throws per hole or 1 throw per hole. Makes it more strategic. And I think if you kept it to, say, 3 per person per 9 holes, you could just disallow throws on the green from inside 10 feet, and the strategy of when to use the throws would dictate whether you wanted to use one instead of make a long putt.

Maybe a you could mix it up by doing something like 2 throws and 2 mulligans per person per 9 holes? 3 throws and 3 mulligans? Maybe 3 mulligans per person per 9 holes and 3 team throws per 9 holes? Other way around if you want to keep lots of throwing?

I also think it might make it more strategic about using throws if all the throws were team throws. So 6 or 9 team throws per 9 holes?

I loved the idea that is on the Tiger woods video game series, match play and the winner of the hole removes a club from the other guys bag. Of course the putter is off limits, but its SO MUCH FUN to piss everybody off on that game, guys are teeing off with a 5 iron when the other guy is using a driver

We play "wolf" when we have 4 or 5 players. It's low stakes (usually a quarter a mark), and it affords everyone a chance to play with everyone else as a partner at least once.

For those not familiar, play is pretty simple.

Each player is assigned a number on the first tee - 1 through 4 (or 5). One the first hole, player #1 is the wolf and hits first. He then selects a partner from the rest of the players - but if he wants player #2 he must declare so BEFORE player #3 hits. If he passes on #2, then he must choose #3 BEFORE #4 hits, right on down the line until he chooses a partner. The partners are then set for that hole - the wolf and his chosen partner vs. the remaining two or three players. Low individual score wins the hole, and the winning team "marks". If there's a tie, there's no blood and you proceed to the next hole and it's #2 man's turn to be the wolf.
If the wolf so chooses, he can "wolf" and go by himself without a partner. If he wins, he gets 4 (or 5) marks. If he loses, all the other players get a mark.
Every hole sees a new "wolf" and a new set of partners. At the end of the round, total the marks and even up.

Sorry for the confusion, mdl had it right, we did 3 throws per 9 (each player) the first go round and then the 3 + 3 the next nine. I think we'll probably stick with the 3 and 3 for each nine as it was a nice balance between golf and shenanigans, with no throws inside 10 feet.

Unrelated to throwgolf, another format I tried with a guy a couple weekends ago that was pretty fun is match play with no strokes given, however once a player goes 2 up, then the other person gets a stroke on the next hole. Keeps it pretty even the whole time and usually makes the match come down to the last couple holes.

We play Wolf quite a bit as well. It constantly changes up the game, and keeps things very interesting. It adds some fun, since there's some money on the line (we play for the same amount), but you can't really lose much. The most I've had to pay out is like $4, and the most I've won has been $8. It's especially fun when the guy riding in the cart with you ends up on the other team....... lol

My name is Dbuck and I play in scrambles.

I recently played in a scramble where in addition to the usual mulligans, you could purchase a "skirt"--you get to use a ladies' tee. One hole is a sharp dogleg right par four with the tee shot over water. The carry is just long enough to be intimidating. My partners all splashed, so I used my "skirt"-the ladies's tee is across the water and hit a 2 iron 20yds short of the green.

Me and my friend played a couple holes once where you start with your shortest club (besides putter), and then work your way up on each shot. So for me it'd be 60*, 56*, PW, 9i, 8i, etc. No putters on the green. It's actually pretty fun.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
