I am looking to get a Verizon Wireless smartphone and would like to get a Golf GPS app.
I currently am using iPhone with GolfShot GPS app that is far-best (IMO) golf GPS & keeping scores.. but Golfshot is only for iPhone for now. If you know any good golf GPS for Verizon Wireless smarphone, please recommend. Thanks.

As I understand, Verizon disables the GPS for 3rd party appliications on their network - they want you to use their nav service and any apps. The only app I'm aware of is their own: GPSGolfShot

Not true. There are many 3rd party apps that access GPS on my phone.

What phone are you looking to get? I have the Motorola Droid but have not been able to try out any of the GPS applications (nor will I really need to as I already have options). A buddy of mine has the same phone and is planning on trying some out. I'll probably be testing them against my iGolf Neo to see how accurate they are.

I only went through a couple of apps on the Droid.....seem decent enough. Not sure of the accuracy though. Still a long ways away from golf season here.
I also found a shot yardage tracker. Pretty cool.

Try Golf Logix.... I have this, after trying about 4 or 5 demos on the course. They have best GPS / Scorecard combination. The Only flaw to the GPS is the fact that it does not give any measurements inside of 30 yards, but other than that is great. As for the accuracy is a yard or two out, at least locally (South Florida). I have played about 5 or 6 rounds with it and love it.

I also tried:
- Green Finder, and while in my opinion the simplest GPS to use, there was no scorecard feature...a must for me on a smartphone app.

- nRange, and this is a nice app that uses satellite images to show the course. It allows you to see the distance between you and the green (in a single screen), and if you want more detail you can switch to the areal view that allows you to move the cursor to measure all other hazards. The downside of this imagery, is that it can be slow...then again, I don't have 3G technology on my phone (which is how the images update) that makes this process painful.

- Accel Golf, this is probably the best scorecard out there, but it also uses areal images to provide distances.

I am very satisfied with my $40 for Golf Logix, the data entry is fast and simple. I highly recommend this product.

BTW ~ I am in no way affiliated to this company, I just wanted to provide my opinion as a user.

That is on top of paying for the GPS service, right? When I bought my Curve, I had thoughts of using it for a golf GPS. However, I learned (with the help of some people here) that the GPS function of my Verizon phone was a feature I had to pay to unlock.

I noticed as of this last summer, the GPS was unlocked on my device for apps like that. More recently I noticed it was even unlocked for Google maps. Previously only used cell tower for location. I would assume on your Curve you'd be good to go. You can demo it for 24 hours if memory serves. BTW, I pay nothing for GPS on my device.

No...You should have to pay additionally for the use of native GPS feature. You may have to pay in Verizon for the use of their navigation services, but nto for GPS. I know that You have torequest to have the lock removed, atleast a few months ago you had to....not sure if it's an automatic removal today.

Did you request it at one of their 92345983245925 kiosks/stores or did you have to call them?

I also have the BB Curve from Verizon and use nRange. You have to turn the GPS on first....

- Go to 'Options' on your main menu (the BlackBerry logo)
- Scroll down to 'Advanced Options'
- Go to 'GPS'
- On the 'GPS Services' menu, change from 'E911 Only' to 'Location On', and also change 'Location Aiding' setting to 'Enabled'

Hope this helps.

I have the Droid Incredible on VZW and I just started using SkyDroid. It's pretty good so far and for $1.99 or whatever it was it is more than worth it! Only drawback is no score keeping ability but they are working on it and "close" according to their website.

One cool feature is that you can map your own course and it takes about 20 minutes. You go on their website and it basically pulls up a Google Map of the course where you can mark bunkers, hazards, end of fairway, whatever. Then it saves it. Next time you go out, everything is there! It has been plenty accurate in my 2 tests.

Got GolfShot on my Droid Incredible and absolutely love the app.

Love recording putts, GIR, Fairways, Scrambles, etc all on my phone.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

I have Verizon HTC incredible and give a +1 to Skydroid as well - it costs less than a hot dog - and so far every course I have played on it has been accurate and easy - It also zooms so you can see how far sand, water etc is but I usually just use it for front middle and back green yardages. It seemed a little slow going back and forth when zooming and I don't know how to take a call or text without getting out of the program but you can get back in real quick

I have the "swing by swing" GPS app and it is great. You can get the basic version for free or get the "pro" for $12 I think. This includes lifetime membership and updates. Definitely worth it IMO. Also, the pro has the score card that you can use for up to 4 people. It also uploads your stats to a website so you can view.
