Nike Slingshot Irons

Hey y'all,

I'm sure these have been discussed before, but I'm wanting to know what you all think about the Nike Slingshot irons? Are these good clubs for someone looking for some help in their iron game? They feel pretty heavy as well so would they help to possibly "groove" a good swing using that weight?

Hey y'all,

They wont help "groove" a swing anymore than any other club.....but they are GI irons, so you should be able to get the ball airborn failr easily with them.

I play slingshots. Easy to swing, long and accurate. They go straight but with a little extra effort you can 'work" the ball. A very good choice for both high hcper and low hcper seeking a a relaxing round.

I have hit the slingshots for a round (forgot my bag at home borrowed a buddies set), as you say they are on the heavy side, I compare them to lead shovels. I have nothing against the nikes but I would suggest an iron set more along the lines of the Adams a7 or even better a7os if you can afford the difference in price. They are "hybrid irons" giving great forgiveness while staying more along the lines of a traditional shape/weight.

For danieldrieberg that posted before me with a 7 handicap with slingshots it would be great to see what you could do with a more player's style iron set, you could probably drop that number down quite a bit.

I started off playing the slingshots and they were definitely helpful - easy to hit and gave me a good feel for the game.

as with any question, you will get answers all over the place. So hear goes. Mind you that I have not hit these.

I friend of mine is looking for GI irons and was looking at the Slingshots, Mizuno MX 100, and the Cobra S2. A local golf shop professional told him that he felt the Nike's did not compare to the other 2 and for his money the S2's were the best of the bunch.

Again, i have not hit any of these, just passing on information my buddy received. I would hit the Slingshots and any other club in your price range. You decide what you like better.

Yea i play them and most of the above is true. They are a bit heavier on the head but they are very easy to hit. After some getting used to I love them. Highly suggest them!

I tried the Slingshots about four years ago. I liked them a lot and they made my top two. I think buying them used would be a great set for a high capper.

I've been playing my slingshots for 2 years (since I was a 30 handicap). Very very easy irons to hit and get up in the air. They have a little more weight to them yes, so you swing a little easier. It seems like the easier you swing with these irons the farther they go. Very straight irons these are, and like danieldrieberg said, with just a little more effort you can work the ball very easily with them. If you get over the largeness of the head, then you'll love these irons.

I build my own clubs (currently I have 6 sets of irons) including player's irons. 42 years of golf experience has made my swing consistent (that's good AND BAD). My favorite player irons are my Hogan apex plus set with Rifle lite 5.5 shafts. The Mizzy mp14s with PX 5.5 are not too bad either. Another set of Hogan CFT with PX 5.5 (GI irons) are up there too.

The slingshots are reshafted with Aldila graphites and lighten the load. Also the heads are the original vs the OS models so they are more compact.

As for scoring yes you can move the ball around more with the blades but you can lose a ball to the left or right easier to. Scoring---I'm within a stroke or two per round with each set. You just adjust to what currently is in your hands.

As I said the slingshot are for a relaxing round. Not for high wind situations. The other clubs are great too with their assets and deficits. If I was to get particular of what clubs are in my hands it would be my driver, wedges and putter. There's where the real scoring occurs. BTW I'm looking for a nice set of TM R7 TP iron heads to match up with some neat graphite shafts I've acquired. My hoing disease is still strong.

I started playing golf last year... and they were my first set of "nice" irons.

I am a pretty natural athlete that played baseball all through high school as well in college. So, I didnt come in blind too much. Granted I had never been on a course before, but I knew i had some athletic ability to make it work.

I started with a box set of Acquity's from Dick's and then bought a set of Taylor Made Super Steels. So, I wanted some new irons that were affordable while I was still learning the game. I didnt want to spend $600 on some irons and then just be frustrated and realize I spent a little too much to look cool.

I went with the Slingshot 4d graphites. Needless to say, I want to sleep with them every night. They are a great club for a beginner. They seem forgiving and they get the ball in the air quickly. Granted I do not know a ton about the game and I couldnt even begin to tell you how to work the ball. I am happy with hitting the ball close and straight. My goal in my first year was to become a consistent ball striker and the Slingshots have for sure helped me.

If you are an avid golfer that is shooting in the 70s and 80s on every course... then you probably wouldnt want these. However, if you are excited to break 90 sometimes and hit the 80s every blue moon... slingshots are GREAT!

Affordable and forgiving.. thats a great combination for a beginner golfer!
