Ok I have the chance to get a brand new set of Walter Hagen T3's. The Bag, driver, Woods, Irons for $199 OR a previously enjoyed (used) set of Titleist DCI 990's , polished re-griped, re-done by the manufacture for $168 irons only... witch would you go for? (trying to prove a point to my wife)

Not sure what point you are trying to prove. The Titleist iron price is good but it's only part of the equation….that is if you plan to carry a full set of clubs. Add the cost of a bargain basement bag, driver, 3-wood, and wedge(s), and putter you could be looking at another $200 (which is a very conservative estimate).

If your budget is $200 then the Walter Hagen set is the better deal. If your budget is more I'd keep shopping.

FYI...If you get fairly serious about the game you will outgrow the Hagen's fairly quickly. If you plan on playing a couple times a year they should be just fine.

+1 Absolutely right! The Hagen's are a great deal for the price, but if you plan on furthering your game, you will probably need to upgrade relatively soon. That being said, you can find a lot of very good used sets of clubs on CL and eBay around the $150 mark so don't just limit yourself to the 990's.

Don't tell me, let me guess: The wife thinks it's silly to spend $168 on just irons (and then have to spend more on woods, putter, bag, et al) when you can spend $200 for the whole shebang?

That said, the 990s are definitely the better deal.

It is questions like this that keep me single. IMHO the Hagens are not worth the $200... in fact they will do more harm than good... the Titleists are the way to go.

990's are the much better choice considering you already have a 1,3,5w and a putter.

HA HA Yup, she cant see why I would want a used set of irons when I could get a nice shinny, flashy, set of bright yellow T3's. Anyway thanks guys I WON and no hall passes were handed over, i got to keep them. Dad-2-3 I am in the exact same boat as you, I wish I had a Driver as good as the one i use to drive her nuts LOL

Just ask her if she'd rather have, for the same price, a pair of Payless pleather clearance shoes with matching belt and purse, or a pair of handmade Manolo Blahniks...

This is problematic, Shanks. If she buys a pair of Manolos, there's no $$ left for clubs.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
