I’m not one who accepts change easily. I’ve been using my Callaway s2h2 irons for over 15 years. Callaway was having a promotional event at Golf Galaxy last Saturday. It was rainy day so I though it would be interesting to see and hit all their clubs and talk to their rep. I had bought a Diablo Driver last year and love it. I always had admired the x18-x22 series, but also wanted to have a go at the new Diablo irons. It was set up nice you could hit any model of club with any type of shaft. Through trial and error and with the Callaway guy working with me I was sold. I shook the mothballs out of my wallet and ordered the Diablo Edge iron-combo set They give you 5-PW and 2 Hybrid and 4 hybrid. They come standard in their “uniflex” shaft, which I really didn’t care for. They tell me this shaft has patented technology that becomes stiffer as the club is swung harder. All I know is it felt like a regular flex shaft, which is a bit too whippy for my taste. So, I upgraded to the Dynamic Gold Superlite S300. I should get the clubs in a couple weeks and am excited.
I’m curious if anyone else has hit/bought these clubs and wondered what their impression was.

Not except at the demo day. My order should be in within a couple of weeks.

The sales guys at Golf Galaxy said all the buzz from customers this year is about the Diablo irons.

  • 2 weeks later...
Got in my first round with the Diablo Edge irons and hybrids. I got the edge cast irons, which are the thickest and most forgiving because I, uhm, sort of suck at hitting irons. The forged version of these are $100 more, have a thinner profile and are a bit more difficult to hit. My Diablo Edges blow away the s2h2 irons that I had so loyally held onto for 15 years. Like I say, I’m far from pure when I make contact on an iron shot and these clubs try their darnest to help me out. If struck poorly the ball advances well enough. When struck close to good, the ball launches off the face and goes about a club longer with more height.
Bottom line, I am very pleased with Callaway’s latest offering to their iron, hybrid, wood collection. It was the right club at the right time!

Great minds think alike! I ordered my Diablo Edge irons on the same day. They should be delivered today... I can't wait to get 'em. I configured my set to go with a hybrid 4i and then traditional 3i - PW. I went with the stock steel shaft. I tried the graphites b/c I don't have a fast swing speed, but I actually swung 2 mph faster with the steel. Glad to hear your good feedback on these.

Edit, I meant to say I got the 3i hybrid and then 4 iron - PW. I love these clubs. I've played about 10 rounds with them now and I consistently hit the ball about 10 yards farther on average. That has taken some getting used to as a end up flying the green sometimes, but that's a good problem to have to deal with.

I normally am a Taylor Made guy, I went to Golf Galaxy this week for a fitting on the Diablo's, the guy had me also hit the burner irons and the new nike's....the Diablo's felt much better than the other 2 clubs. Got my new set, the 3-4Hybrid and the 5-PW Irons...can't wait to Play with them this weekend.

I think they will take time to get used to the distance, at the range I was consistent at 150 with the 8 Iron. The ball really does fly off the club...

I want to pound the MEATHEAD & The METROSEXUAL from the Slazenger RAW commercial..

Yep, that’s the same configuration I have. More then a month of solid play with these and I feel great about my decision to go with the Diablo Edge hybrid and irons. My next move is to get the gap wedge.

    • No, they will collect the "Stay & Play" cost at the Virtues on Sunday. I was a little surprised by that, I would collect on Saturday, but I guess the person doing the reservations & bills is located at the Virtues.  I think we can trust that none of us are going to run out on the bill and leave us in a lurch.
    • Thanks for following up. Since you're going to be booking the stay and play packages, does that mean you have to put up the money up front?
    • They're playing 16 games in each match though. Don't need much of an advantage before that number of players significantly loads things in their favor. The other team has to win 8.5 games to beat them. At a 65/35 split, that's a lot and pretty unlikely (about 10% of the time).
    • Why does the second sentence have to be true? If they're used to playing a tough course that's improperly rated, they're going to both have inflated indexes and have higher skills relative to them. If their home course features a variety of different challenges, I don't see why their game wouldn't travel well. And on the flip side, some courses and their members take pride in how hard their course is and how tough it's rated, and that bit of vanity ends up hurting them in these kinds of competitions.
    • I discussed it today but can call back and re-confirm.  I would love to be wrong on that point. Note: That may have been before they changed the hotel due to lack of room at Hampton Inn. Update on Friday Hotel: If I can give a count to EagleSticks they can get us a discount on Friday night at the hotel.  I do not have the $$ but should be much lower than the $249 the hotel quoted me. I do not have my list with me for the Friday hotels but if you want one, please post ASAP and I will get the rate and get them held. Thanks @billchao for catching this.
