I have been thinking lately that Sergio is poised to become the greatest "should have been but never was" on the tour. He obviously has some physical skills, but he does not seem to have the imagination and "closing" ability to win many times or win majors on tour.

Unless Sergio starts playing every oddball tournament that all the top 20 players skip, he may not break 10 wins and I hardly see a major in his future. His stats are amazingly poor for someone who burst on the scene with such flare and fanfare.

I think he has the physical talent and the desire. Many players don't develop thhe necessary mental skills to win until their thirties. Tom Lehman wasn't even on tour at his age and he won a major. Davis Love and Phil Mickelson Both came on Tour very young and immensely talented yet did not win until their thirties. Mark O'Meara was in his 40s. I wouldn't throw him on the trash heap yet. He has at least a dozen years.

This just in: Sergio is still only 26 years old. We heard all this talk about Phil Mickelson a few years back, and he has won three majors since. By this time in 2010, Sergio will have a couple majors to his name. He is still a young pup. If he ends up not having one by the time he is 30, we can talk about it more.

The experts always say a golfer is in his prime in his 30s. We are just used to watching Tiger win all the majors in his 20s and 30s. For the most part, however, golfers win the big ones in their 30s......or even 40s in Vijay's situation.

You beat me to it. Philly Mick didn't win his first major until he was 34. Same with Ben Hogan.

Sergio's far too young to start laying blanket statements on him just yet. I know we live in a fast food drive-thru world, but let's give this one a little time...

True Phil and Davis did not win majors till after 30.

For the record:

Phil Mickelson had a win on the PGA's Northern Telecom Open when he was still in college. He had 16 PGA titles by the time he turned 30.

Davis Love III had 8 Tour wins and couple of World Cup of Golf wins by 30 years of age.

Sergio Garcia has 11 wins across the PGA(6) and European(5) Tours, which is more than I would have thought, given his lame performance in recent years. After shining so brightly early on, I guess he seems to have underperformed on the PGA tour. He just seems to fold like a cheap suit every time he is in contention against the big guns. Following in Phil's footsteps, he has now inherited the mantle of "the best golfer never to win a major."

Even still, if you gave me good odds, I'd put $100 down on Sergio never winning a major.

I can see that as well. Unfortunately for Sergio, his prime years will coincide with Eldrick's...

We all know he can strike the ball but there is alot more to this game then that, and the one thing that I am talking about is putting. Sergio just can't putt. You put him in contention and that magic wand looks like a 2X4 in his hand. I dont think he will ever win a major.

Right now- you are right, he looks like a monkey f&$%$ing a football when he stands over a putt. But at one time he was a superb putter. I'm not positive about this, but wasn't he one of the best on tour around 2000, 2001? (I thought the announcers made mention of this at the PGA) I remember the beef with Phil a few years ago was he didn't make putts under pressure either, which he has overcome. Sergio certainly will find a "Rotella, Pelz" combo that works for him, and get through this putting problem.

I'm not saying Sergio is gonna blow away Tiger (or even COME CLOSE), but to say he'll never win a major sounds absurd to me. He is one of the best ball strikers on tour, and with the level of year round coaching, workouts these guys have access to, it is just a matter of time before he gets his due. Eric- I'll take that bet, but if you say NEVER and believe it so much, I'll gladly collect that C- note from you in a straight up bet.

Sergio does look like an idiot over those 4 footers, you just know he's going to miss and it looks like he knows it too. Watch him in the Ryder Cup though, I'll bet it's a totally different look and comfort level he's got then. He'll figure it out eventually, he seems to have too much all around talent to let one aspect (albiet a very important aspect) keep him from winning multiple majors. I think in the next 3 years we'll see Sergio with a green jacket.

Sergio's Putting Rankings by Year:

2000 - T4th 2001 - 24th 2002 - 35th 2003 - 175th 2004 - 129th 2005 - 196th 2006 - 160th Pretty sad to see. Wasn't 2002-2003 when Sergio started having problems with the never-ending waggles?

Yeah, 2002 at Bethpage Black was pretty tough to watch. Those fans weren't very patient with ol' Sergio that week for the U.S. Open.

He was a very fine putter when he started as those stats indicate. If (and it's a big if) he could ever find that putting touch, he could win 8-10 major championships in his career. His ball-striking is a lot of fun to watch.

8-10's a stretch. That puts him ahead of people like Watson, Trevino, Faldo, Hogan... I don't know about all THAT.

Yeah, that's a bit overboard, but he is talented enough to win a couple in a row from time to time. Maybe 4 or 5 is a good mark for him if his golf game becomes complete.

    • Fair   My uneducated thought: the big miss is the penalty area. If you want to optimize score, missing into the bunker (likely 5) is better than missing right into the penalty (possible 6). With that, your strategy seems sound and if you hit a committed shot, you get a bunker 5% of the time, take your medicine and hopefully get a putt for par but accept bogey. You may find yourself in a penalty situation 2-3% of the time and accept the associated outcome. The vast majority of the time though you are giving yourself a good approach shot into the green.

It is not very intense (since i dont want to get sweaty in my work clothes), so just a touch above leisurely. 3 days a week I walk on the treadmill for 60 mins. I alternate the incline from 4 to 10 for a couple minutes, once every ten minutes. I lift my kettlebells nearly everyday. I have a couple complex routines. I find just 15 minutes and my heart rates is elevated
