I'm 18,and I am going to start walking when I play(I would already, but the course closest to me only allows carts ). However, I found a local Muni around here that will let me play all day for 9$, its not a rated course and has no slope etc, but it will be good practice. They let you walk, and I was going to invest in some golf cleats since I wanna be able to play in college to(not for the school but just for fun) and will walk, so it's cheaper. Any ideas on a good pair of golf shoes that won't break the bank? thanks!

Footjoy is a good company and makes some decent, cheap pairs. Go to the store and try some on though. There are a lot of easy ways to get good deals on shoes, so shouldn't be a problem finding something. My personal viewpoint though is that it never hurts to invest in yourself, so if you've had foot issues in the past then you might as well cough up the extra coin to get that truly comfy pair.

I started playing last year and didn't want to invest a lot of $$ in shoes until I knew I'd be playing. Picked up Adidas Golflite Tours. They're VERY comfortable, my feet are fine after walking 18. As you'd imagine from their name, they're very light, and they've also proven to be somewhat waterproof in light rain. I'm pretty amazed. Look around, I believe you can get them for $30 on budgetgolf.com

Take a look at the Nike Air Tour Sport model. Shoe is lightweight, but quite sturdy, and you can tighten laces to contour of your foot. Comes with Spider spikes as standard. May be on closeout, because they were reduced to $80 a pair.

I also like them because I have narrow feet, but the size M fit me fine.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I have had these Florsheim's for over 6 years and they are still in great shape.. These are EXTREMELY comfortable and very light. The best thing about these is that i can walk off the golf course and wear them home because they have molded spikes. When i bought these i though that i would wear them out in a year or two, but the spikes are still in perfect shape.

You can buy these on ebay for around $70

Footjoy Contours are great. FJ makes multiple widths too. If you need a wide shoe, you can get it with FJ. Nike and most of the others are nice shoes if you have average to narrow feet, but if you have wide feet (like me) they suck.

You can lay up when your dead.

Footjoy Contours are the best. You can easily find some on clearance at a superstore or online.

If you don't play much in rain, Nike Air Max Summer.
Hands down the most comfortable golf shoes I've ever worn, they are soft like running shoes, but still provide the needed stability.

Another FootJoy Contours wearer here. I never ride, and play 3-4 rounds per week. My contours keep my feet comfy. I got mine for $69 on clearance at Dick's last year.

I agree with Zeph, the Nike running/cross training style shoes are excellent for walking. They are just like wearing sneakers with spikes.

My only advice is to get a really good pair of shoes. Don't go cheap. Spend a few extra bucks and get something good. There is nothing worse than playing and your feet hurt by 15 because the shoes are not comfortable. There are plenty of places to get great shoes cheap, just don't get cheap shoes.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I agree with goblue. if you plan to do most of your golf walking..do not go cheap on your shoes, youll regret it. Find a pair that have a good repupation for being durable, waterproof and comfortable.

I have had both Nike and FootJoy shoes, my advice is get the FJs (probably the superlites will fit your budget) and stay away from Nike, they don´t last much, and their "air chambers" will be blown in no time.

I'd suggest going to a golf shop and trying on 2 dozen pairs of shoes. For me, that's the only way---shoe comfort is too personal. Try some that people have suggested here, but try others too. When I did this, I found that even some of the expensive ones people were raving about felt awful to me. For your first pair especially, I wouldn't even consider buying mail order or eBay.

For me, I strongly prefer the tennis/running shoe style to the saddle shoe or more dress shoe style. I wound up with a pair of Nikes for $50 or $60 that are great for me. They're not waterproof though, which isn't an issue here in Southern California, so they may not suit everyone. I've had them for about a year now and they've shown no signs of wearing out, aside from needing a few spikes replaced.

In the bag:

Also, look at this link too ---> Adidas Tour 360 3.0 When it comes down to it, personally I think one of the last items you should skimp on is your shoes. Go too cheap and your feet are gonna be killing you. If you can find the room to spend a little more money ($75-$100) you will open up yourself to a lot more choices for a comfy shoe. My .02

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
