I had the opportunity to test 5 irons last night at my local pro shop. I am a 8 handicap with a club head speed of 93mph on average. I take an aggressive line at the ball so my trajectory is somewhat high. Here are the clubs i tried (limited selection until more come in because I am a lefty).

1. Titleist AP1 (6 iron)
2. Mizuno MX-200 (6 iron)
3. Ping i15 (6 iron)
4. TaylorMade R9 (6 iron)
5. TaylorMade Burner (6 iron)

Above is the order I ranked them. They were all pretty consistent on distance, except for the Burner. The gimmick of an additional 15yds. is true given you hit the sweet spot. I was taking the Burner 6 iron up to 220yds. However, it felt very soft and was dramatically inconsistent if I missed the sweet spot. Plus the club head is HUGE.

My top 2 are both great clubs. I liked the feel of the Mizuno (even though it is more of a true game improvement iron than the AP1) so much that I want to try the MP-52 before I make a decision on the AP1 irons. I really like the thin top line and sole of the AP1 while offering forgiveness.

My question to you guys is can you offer other suggestions on irons that you feel would be comparable to the AP1 and MP-52?

Thanks,

John

I would really suggest not to get the AP1s and go with AP2s, they are almost as forgiving but they are much easier to work with. They are an investment for sure but they are clubs you can keep to the end of time.

I too would go AP2 over the 1's should you decide to go that route. They are a great club. I obviously am going to be a bit biased to Mizuno as they just seemed to fit me perfect. I really would give the 52's a shot, you wont be disapointed. Also give the MP58's a try too. Should you like the MP lineup you might want to look into the MP57's. They were discontinued last Fall and can be had for $550 and under if you look around.

I second what others have suggested. I bought the AP1s last summer and I love them. They are great clubs! But, the AP2s are better. They feel better (probably due to them being forged), look better (small top line and a little smaller head) and are easier to work (no as much offset and thinner top line)

The AP2s are much more comparable to the Mizuno MX200 then the AP1s are

Yeah, I echo what has been said before, I would steer clear of the AP-1. I had them for a year and a half, at would say their more appropriate for handicaps of 15 or above. At a 10 handicap you should be able to handle a the AP-2 or similar (R9 TP) iron.

My Tools of Ignorance:

Driver: Ping I20 9.5*
Woods/Hybrids: Cobra AMP 3W and 3 HY

Irons: Cobra AMP 4-GW

Wedges: Callaway Forged Copper 56* and 60*

Putters: Scotty Cameron  35" (Several of the flow neck blade variety)

Ball: Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star

Bag: Nike Performance Carry

I am also on a quest for new irons , but I'm not as experienced as you. I'm looking to get into the game more seriously. I definitely want a 'tour' style iron. I will work on honing my skills to be worthy of swinging that type of iron. Your 2-4 are on my list. I have to admit...I wasn't thinking about Mizuno irons until I saw how many people on here rave about them. If I could get some MP57s with a tour stiff shaft I would probably jump at it...but so far I can only find them with DG S300s.

Irons: MP 57 with Project X Rifle 6.0 shafts
Driver: Big Bertha 460 (9 degree loft) with UST ProForce 66g V2X Graphite Shaft
Wedges: Spin Milled Black Nickel 56.14, Spin Milled Black Nickel 60.07, Spin Milled Black Nickel 52.08 (next purchase)
Putter: White Hot XG #6
Ball: TP Red

I just hit the new Callaway Diablo irons, they were pure, and will not only help you learn, but be a nice club for a good long time (5 years) while you learn... In response to the OP, I would never think of the AP1's the AP2's are so nice, you will never want to change... much smaller sole so they do require a little more skill, but hitting them is a dream!
