  • 2 years later...

A few years ago, I decided I was going to golf in all 50 states of the U.S., plus Ireland and Scottland, before I kick the bucket.  So far, here is where it stands...

FL - I don't even remember the name as it was long before I started this quest... so I'm headed back.

NC - Tobacco Road (but I'm headed back at some point for Pinehurst #2)

NH - Mount Washington

NY - Oak Hill Country Club - East Course (and several others, as I'm from NY)

OH - Longaberger

PA - Mystic Rocks at Nemacolin Resort

SC - Caledonia (but I'm headed back at some point for the Ocean Course at Kiawah)

VT - Green Mountain National (and Okemo)

Currently I'm just going off a list of the top 100 public access courses from golf magazine and a list of the top in each state from golf digest.  There are a several must play courses on the list already (Ocean Course at Kiawah, St. Andrews, Turnberry, Wolf Creek (NV), Arcadia Bluffs, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes, Pinehurst #2).

I'd love to hear everyone else's thoughts on some must play courses, and what some of your favorites are!

I live in Idaho and that can be a hard state to play amazing golf, but there are some pretty good ones. The must play is the Coeur D' Alene Resort. I mean how many courses do you get to ferry out to the green? It's pretty cool, they actually control and move the green.

As I don't belong to a private club my list has to be public access courses:

-Pebble Beach

-Pinehurst #2

-St. Andrews

-Royal County Down

-All the Bandon courses

-Plantation Course at Kapalua

-Harbour Town

-Spyglass Hill

I've already played Bethpage Black, Torrey Pines South, Pasatiempo and most of the great public courses in Michigan. There are other great links courses in Scotland, England, Ireland and Northern Ireland I'd choose but am not sure which are public.

Jeffrey - Coeur D' Alene (and Circling Raven) are on the list of options in Idaho.  Sounds like I'll definitely have to play Coeur D' Alene.  Thanks for your response!

MSchott - So what did you think of Torrey Pines and Pasatiempo?

Pasatiempo is an awesome course. It was recently restored by Tom Doak and has many great MacKenzie greens and uses the terrain perfectly. Great bunkers! Torrey Pines has some nice holes and the views of the canyons are nice. It's not a must play IMO except for being famous. Too many mundane holes but 3, 13 and 18 are fun holes.

I'd sure would like to play Hillside again.

And Australia, not choosy on which course.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

My 2 cents: I live in CT. and have only been playing for 5 years now.  Fairview Farms Golf Course is really a very nice course. I have  played there every year I can ( 3 times) at a charity tournament  dedicated to a former co-worker who was an avid golfer and that was his home course. I've played there twice in casual rounds.

Last month my Fiance and I were in NJ. She had a two day seminar to attend and I went along to play two rounds while she was at Rutgers University. I played Bunker Hill Golf Course at the recommendation of one of her friends, But I also picked Quail Brook Golf Course at random for my second round and was very impressed.

Side note, her seminar was on a Tuesday and Wednesday, which was when I played. We came back home Wed. evening. She had to go back on the Friday to take the seminar final exam. I went back with her and went back to the Pro Shop at Quail Brook and purchased a course Wind Breaker, as I was so impressed with that course. In two years she'll have to attend that seminar again, if I go along, I will go back and play that course again, and pick a second course to try.

Also half an hour drive from Rutgers University is also the USGA/ Arnold Palmer museum. After her exam was over we drove over there to go through the exhibits. Their web site says's it take two hours to make the tour, it took us three. (She plays golf also). If you go to the museum plan on spending six hours there. They have other activities that unfortunately we just did not have enough time to see/try.

I'm planning a day trip in the fall with my golf partners to back to the museum and make a day out of it.

~Tom B.

I ordered a Chicken and an Egg on the Internet, to find out which came first... I'll keep you posted!

For Virginia, give The Federal Club a look for your list. It's a really nice course in amazing shape and will give you a challenge.

HazardMagnet - thanks for the thought on CT.  It was either Lake of Isles or Wintonbury Hills, but thanks for the 3rd choice to consider.  I certainly take a look at it!

Showtime - Arcadia Bluffs was my first choice in MI, but yea, it does look like it is really out of the way from anything.  My other thought was Forest Dunes or Bay Harbour.  Since MI is kind of up north all by itself, I may just have to plan a playing all three!  Have you played either Forest Dunes or Bay Harbour?

Chris Steward & IternerantGolfer - For VA I was looking at The Homestead (for obvious reasons) and Kingsmill always looks great in the golf magazines haha.  The Federal Club was a consideration as well.  I will check out Spring Creek as well.  Have either of you played Homestead or Kingsmill?

Thanks again everyone for all the thoughts!
