I think you're wrong about #1 never happening. I'm an 8 handicap and I've had a handful of <3 differentials in my career. One of them was last summer, and it was a 78 on a course rated 73.8 with a triple bogey on 18. And I missed a couple of makeable putts earlier in the round. If I could be 2 or 3 swings away from pulling that off, then certainly a 5 capper has it in him.
Makes sense because so far your "wall" has been <3 and my "wall" has been even with the CR. Like you I could have done it, but always found a way to mess it up.
Biggest handicap for me doing it is that I only play rated courses maybe 15 times a year, and haven't played one at all this year.
I need a vacation to go jump some walls.
