I was accused of being obsessive compulsive my my wife and one of my playing partners this week on 2 seperate occasions about one thing I do every week without fail.

I typically play 4 rounds a week, Thursday through Sunday. When I get finished playing on Sunday, without fail, I always bring my clubs in the house, take every one of them out of the bag, break out the Formula 409, the brush and the towel, and give them all a good cleaning. Clean every speck of dirt out of the grooves, wipe down the shafts and grips, let them dry, and then put them back in the bag.

One of my playing partners says besides wiping them with a towel, and hitting them with the brush on the course, he never cleans his clubs, and that I'm OCD about my clubs being clean. I say I paid a lot of money for these clubs, I don't hit them like they deserve, they can at least be clean.

I usually bring them into the house for cleaning about every 6 weeks. I play twice a week. I maintain the grooves with a brush on the course, but as far as getting the dirt film off the club, once every 6 weeks or so. My wedges I might hit with a towel and some spit a little more often. Your not really OCD, you just have a schedule.

That's not OCD at all, at least clinically. Wanting to keep something that you paid a lot of money for clean is perfectly normal. TO be OCD something must be maladaptive. This is not even close. I could go on if you want.

I see nothing wrong with that. I clean mine on the course with a brush and keep a wet towel with me to wipe off between shots. They come in the house for a cleaning maybe every two weeks. Taking care of them means you can sell them at a good price if you choose to as well.

Golf is a good sport to be a little OCD. I wipe down my clubheads/grooves probably once a week, esp if the course staff didn't do it after my last round. 409 might be a little much, but if it works for you, that's fine (although if you're not hitting well, may be time to change the routine!). I might suggest doing it in the garage instead of inside the house for the sake of your marriage though, esp if you just spend 4 days in a row playing and not being with your wife...if she's anything like mine, she might not appreciate that after 4 rounds you're still doing golf-related activities when you get back. Out of sight, out of mind!

after each round, I come home, grab a beer, put some warm soapy water in a bucket and clean my clubs and put them away clean

I agree, not OCD, clinically or otherwise. I clean mine every two or three trips to the range, and after every round as well.

I've been married for 15 years, and typically our schedules are opposite, she's working, I'm off, or I'm working and she's off, so golf doesn't interfere much with our little personal time. I think that's probably the main reason we've been married for 15 years, because it's almost like we're still dating (but with children)........lol

As far as not hitting them well, it's getting better everyday, I had to quit golf for 10 years because of back problems, but had back surgery a few years ago, put on a lot of weight, and picked up a club again to see how it felt, and the pain wasn't there anymore after the surgery, so I started playing again to try to lose some weight. While my flexibility isn't there because of the fused vertebrae, I'm starting to adapt, and my scores are coming down. I'm finally consistantly breaking into the 80's again, because I found an instructor who was able to work with my limitations in range of movement and still give me a fairly decent golf swing that's gettiing a lot better lately.

You're clearly not OCD since you listed the letters of it out of alphabetical order. You're just taking good care of a good investment. I don't bring mine in my place and clean them as much as you do, but I clean whenever I get a chance on the course, such as when the group ahead has just reached the green and we've got a few minutes. And on the range, after I hit a club, I'll clean it before hitting any other club.

I clean my clubs probably twice a week. For one thing, it does satisfy the addiction when I'm unable to go out and play or practice. Also I feel more confident knowing that there is a clean clubface when I address the ball.

I'll clean my clubs in the kitchen sink at least once a week. I think there is a mental component of pride and confidence when hitting a clean looking club. My fiance thinks I am OCD, however, she doesn't mind as I usually need to clean the sink and kitchen first!

Not OCD at ALL!

I have OCD and to be honest I usually clean my clubs just about after every time I play. I've been pretty good about it lately though and do it now only about once a week...

I clean my clubs every time I play. I soak them for about 15 minutes and then clean the grass stains and dirt off them in 5. If I go to a range without mats I'll usually clean them after that too.

I play Thursday Afternoon, Fri/Sat/Sun because of school during the week, and I usually do this once a weekend as well. I like making sure my clubs are clean so that the next time I go out and play I don't have dirt caked on a wedge or something. I also attempt to clean my grips after every round to make sure I don't have to regrip them as often :P The part I feel OCD about is that I keep my clubs/bag in my room at all times when not in use, and I also wipe down/clean my shoes after every round so the leather doesn't get crappy on me. I've read that keeping them in a garage or car is bad for grips and also for shoes because the constant temperature changes and dryness makes them dry out and go bad faster? I need to get a good clear shoe polish for full grain leather golf shoes though, any ideas? :P

Not at all. I clean mine as I play. I have a wet towel and use the ball washers on the course as I play. When I leave the course, mine are all ready clean.

No way dude.... I clean my clubs after every round.

Don't mean to change the subject, but I also have back problems (herniated disc L5-S1) which seems to flare up every 2-3 years. Good to hear there is hope for playing golf after fusion surgery because I may have to go that route in the future.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
