Basically, if Phil wins, you get a free Callaway driver. If you went into the store all you had to do was fill out a card and didn't even have to pre-purchase the driver.

Only day 1, though I guess...

i didn't even know it was going on. That is upsetting because I signed up for each of the previous ones last year.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Kicking myself for not taking what's essentially a white-washed $300ish bet on Philly Mick.....eh no. I am surprised they picked him, normally they use an up and comer that's never tasted a major i.e. Sergio or AK come to mind.

i signed up, but theirs a lot of things you have to be/ do to actually get it. Like one thing that'll be bad for me if he does win is that it says you have to have a usga regulated handicap lower than 24, im well below 24, its just i dont do my handicap through the usga.... ill figure somethin out.

You're talking about the "Play with Phil" promotion. The OP was speaking about the "Win with Phil" promotion where you either buy a driver or fill out a free entry form and if Phil wins, you get either reimbursed or a free driver mailed to you.

In the bag:
Driver: `09 Launcher (10.5º) w/ Fujikura Fit-On Red Stiff
3 Wood: `09 Launcher w/ Fujikura Fit-On Red Stiff shaft

My understanding of the promotion was that you had to buy a callaway driver first, then sign up for the promotion. It wouldn't make sense to let people just sign up and win a free driver if Phil wins, because they wouldn't gain anything. They don't hand out lottery tickets for free. The whole point is to encourage lots of people to buy new Callaway drivers...and Phil probably won't win so they get a lot of money. They wouldn't risk losing hundreds of thousands of dollars if they weren't gaining anything.

Callaway could just be plain stupid though...I didn't read into the promotion much because I bought my new FT9 just last year so I don't need a new driver. But I doubt you can just sign up and not buy the driver first, they're not just gonna send everyone a new drver if Phil wins.

But I doubt you can just sign up and not buy the driver first, they're not just gonna send everyone a new drver if Phil wins.

Actually, that is exactly the case as evidenced by the "No Purchase Necessary"

fine print here . Interestingly this year, they actually require you to go to the store to get the entry form where in years past, you could download it from the site.

Actually, they DO hand out these lottery tickets for free, because by law they (more or less) have to:

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/...chase-required That's why you might kick yourself, even if you don't think Phil's going to win. It's a free chance to win a $400 (MSRP) driver. I don't actually need the driver, but it's hard to turn down a free offer like that.

I'd never even heard of such an event. I'll have to watch for this in the future.

If you read the rules it says for those who do not make a purchase but fill out an entry form and mail it in they get to select one of the "promotional items" listed on the form. In the section for those who purchase a new driver it states that new drivers are "promotional items." It does not reiterate this in the section for no purchase entries. It makes me wonder if the promotional items for those who don't make a purchase are hats and T-shirts.

In my Bag:

No, the "promotional items" are the same. On the mail-in form, you specify which driver (FT-IZ or, IIRC, Diablo Edge), and what specs (shaft stiffness, loft, handedness) and that's what they'll send you if Phil gets his game together this weekend. The prizes are the same whether you enter by purchasing it ahead or by asking it be sent to you later.

Thanks for clearing that up. Now I wish I had of known about this promotion sooner

I got the e-mail and figured it was like the ones they did in the past where you had to buy it and then would get a refund. Guess I should have read the e-mail before hitting delete. Now I have another reason to dislike him.

    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
