How long has everyone been golfing, how you got into the game, and what is your favorite part of the game? I have been golfing for about 3 years. I started by going out with my father-in-law, and now hooked. I love to just get out and enjoy the beautiful courses. I love how relaxing it is to get away for a few hours with no worries.

I walked along with two of my friends for nine holes on May 20th of last year. Absolutely loved it and the very next day I sold my PS3 and got a set of clubs. Got hooked and haven't looked back since.

I have been playing for probably about 12 or 13 years now. My dad has always played golf and I remember him taking me to the driving range when I a lot younger.

My grandpa used to take me golfing at a local par three course all the time when I was younger. Unfortunately I didn't stick with it (too expensive, didn't have a lot of money growing up) but I did buy a cheap set of clubs at walmart when I was in high school and played here and there. I've never been a "serious" golfer, but I am getting into it pretty heavy now.

Watched the '86 Masters with my Dad on the Sunday... he was rooting for some guy named Jack, so I did too. I was 16 and had never seen a golf tournament before.

The next day at school I talked my friend who was a jr. golfer and convinced him to take me to the driving range. That was 24 years ago... the rest is history :)

Cheers, Allan

I started for a company sponsored tournament, loved it. Started playing on a regular basis pre-kids. Stepped away for 10 years until my boys grew up enough that they could enjoy the game with me. My 11 YO is hooked and plays on the local club team. My youngest is good for 7 holes, before he'd rather dig in the dirt.

I'm in the middle of my 5th year of golfing. I started when I was 9 when my dad took me out on the range. Bought some junior golf clubs for me and have playing ever since. When I first started I was into hockey, soccer, basketball, and football. I was just getting a taste of all sports. I started to get serious about golf dropped football hockey and soccer. Now golf is my passion and basketball and snowboarding give me something to do during the long Iowa winters.

I was working on a promotion to management at my company so I started taking lessons. It helped to be able to go out with branch managers during company outings. I got to showcase my intellect, cause I didn't have much of a golf game. A few years later finally a manager, I was hitting the ball quite well and I remember during another company tournament I was in a group behind the Region managers who were on the green of a 320 yard par 4. I stepped to the tee and drove the green(not intentional), the ball bounced through their group. That's how you impressed upper management in the 80's!

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

Started last year when I decided to sign up for a church scramble tournament. Me and a friend went out a few days before the tournament so I could play/ swing a golf club at a ball for the first time. Played 18 and ever since then I have been straight hooked on this game. Before I was playing video games and doing stupid stuff, now I go out in the backyard and chip and stuff. Going to start selling off my old hobbies to further pursue this one. Hopefully I will still have time in college to play even though I'm going to have to double major to get my desired degree :)

Almost two years ago my cousin and i randomly decided to go out to a local par 3 course and play 18. My first shot from about 120 yards hit the green(wish I could do that more often now...stupid beginners luck haha) and I was hooked. Due to college I have not been able to play very much, maybe 20 times, but with graduation approaching and my recent club purchase I hope to be out a lot more : )

My dad started taking me with him when I was about 13. After the first 5 or 6 times he bought me my own clubs. I still only played casually with him until I was about 15 and started to really get into it. As soon as I turned 16 I drove myself to the course or the range every day.

My favorite part of the game? Everything. I love the way my driver feels when I hit the sweet spot. I love the sound I hear when I trap the ball with my 7-iron. I love being outside with a few good friends or by myself. I love having bad rounds and working out the kinks on the range the next day. I love that feeling of invincibility when a shot goes exactly the way you pictured it. I love the freedom for creativity. I love how every course is different. I love waking up early and playing an empty course with the dew still on the ground. I love the highs, the lows, the challenge, the struggle, and man do I love making birdies.

Got a 4 iron for christmas some year which we took out to hit balls in the snow. I actually hit a decent shot where my ball flew off into the snow and was never found again.

I was about 12 or 13, my dad got me a set of cut down irons, just a few inches. I would go out and play golf with him. Then i got lessons, i got hooked. Been playing golf for 12 years now.

ive lived next to golf courses all my life... both parents worked... grand parents took care of us... so after school with my brothers being bored to death we'd spend all our time at the courses... got to know the staff and theyd give us free range balls for running errands and eventually started hanging out with the neighborhood kids playing as much golf as possible... thats going on 20 yrs

Went on an 8th grade class trip for a 'fun day' at a resort in the Pocono region of Pennsylvania. There wasn't really much to do there for a sports-minded youngster such as myself. There was soccer, which I despised because I played football... there was volleyball, which I was way too bad at... and there was basketball, which I grew tired of quickly. There was also a driving range... so I took a stroll over and grabbed a 5 Iron. I ended up in the booth next to my Vice Principal and he showed me how to properly hold the club (I grew up playing baseball... so I instinctively held it like I did a baseball bat). I hit a couple of pretty good shots... and loved it.

When I got home... I told my dad. He was shocked because he used to play when he was younger... but hadn't touched a club in a long while. For my 8th grade graduation, my parents bought me a starter set (3 Wood, 5 Iron, 7 Iron, 9 Iron, Putter). Shortly after... my dad and I visited the range and a few weeks after that, finally hit a course. I've been playing since then (except for a 4-5 year period when my son was first born and we didn't have the money).

The last two years, I've become pretty serious about playing again... so my handicap has been dropping. Next revision is tomorrow... should see another drop of 1.4 to my index. By the end of the month, I'll HOPEFULLY be even lower. My target is to be below a 20.0 handicap by then... and by the Club Championship in late July, I hope to be below an 18.0 handicap.

This game is a drug... that much I know.

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
