How do you lose your PUTTER?

Was playing the other day and as we walked off the green and to the next tee box, I see a guy driving back up the cart path the wrong way. He's got the pale face thing going on (when you've lost a club or headcover and hoping to find it) and ask "Did you guys see my putter?"

We didn't see it and he kept on driving. Now as he drives back by, he looks in our bags to make sure....Was our word not good enough?

Now I've forgotten a wedge before but how in the world do you lose your putter? We had a good chuckle about that one before we tee'd off. He never drove back by so hopefully he found it...

Putter and Driver....usually clubs that never leave my hand after they exit my bag, until they are put back in the bag. The only plausible explanation would be that he brought a putter and a wedge to the side of a green and he chipped in. I would be so excited that I might have run over to the cup to get my ball........but I have a slot in my bag for each club. Haven't left one behind since I bought it.

I probably would have looked too. I am sure that you are trustworthy person, but he doesn't know that and there are enough jerks playing the game that no one is above suspicion if you don't know them.

And I could see how someone might leave their putter.

Never left a putter, because its the last club i put in my bag on a hole. It shoulde be impossible to loose. Definetly a wedge, done that a few times. Though i left a couple of fairway woods on the tee, when i brought up a couple, i didn't want to walk back to my bag to switch to a 5-wood after pulling the 3-wood.

That was the only conclusion I could come up with. Maybe he chipped in? But you would remember what hole you did it on hopefully?

I left a wedge once and went to the pro shop to report it. The guy says "what kinda club?" I tell him a CG14 wedge and he says "good luck, that's nice. I doubt you'll get it back" Luckily a guy found it and returned it to me.

I lost a putter once but I don't remember the circumstances. What I did find irritating is that no one turned it in. I've played golf for many years at the public courses here in Seattle, and have lost maybe 3 clubs in that time. They ALL came back to me. Twelve years ago I joined one of the CCs and since then have lost the putter and a 7 iron. Neither found it's way to the pro shop. I'm not trying to stereotype here but if anything I'd expect more honesty at the Club.
But then half of the membership are either lawyers or stock brokers....

Not hard to lose a putter. You can take a wedge and putter out when you miss the green, then chip in, and go to get the ball from the hole with the wedge still in hand, return to the cart, and forget the putter. Simple as that.

Or the guy putted out, then put the putter down to replace the pin. I'm not sure how you'd forget to pick it back up though.

Like most, I've left wedges a few times, but luckily always gotten them back. Such a horrible feeling when you look in your bag to find a club missing...

At one time or other, I have found a way to leave almost any club in my bag....

Driver, oh yeah.....maybe it's a good walk to the tee box where I have to double back.....walk up with Driver and 3wd, decide to go with the 3 and leave the driver out of the way.....my buddy Richard almost left his driver last weekend, same situation....

Maybe you are in a cart and it's path only.....you take your 4 and 5 irons.....put one down in the rough, hit the other.....yep, had to go back for this before....

Putter, absolutely.....as mentioned, you chip in, get all excited, go get the ball.....next hole - whoa, no putter

I can remember doing that. I brought an iron and my putter greenside for a chip shot, knocked in the chip and then just went to go get my ball out of the cup. Completley forgot about my putter. Luckily the next hole was a short par 3 and i didnt have much of a walk to go back and get it.

I had one of those external putter clip attachments. The putter dropped out and I didn't discover it missing until the next hole. Ran back and picked it up where it fell.

To heck with the clip, it's going in the junk pile.

I already lost a favorite Lob Wedge, that's enough damage.

Hmmm, maybe he missed a 2-footer, threw the putter in anger, sulked back to the cart in a huff and never picked up the offending club.

Would never happen to me, of course...

Cheers,

I did the same thing after I chipped one it and in my celebration I jogged to the cup to get my ball. Then my buddy reminded me that I left my putter!! doh!!

Or, the player could have taken his wedge and putter to get up an down (which happens all the time) and hit such a great chip so close, his playing partner allows him to pick up the 'gimmee'. He may have left it that way.
