so, lately i've been pushing my shots to the right of my target. i tried to strengthen my grip a little bit to compensate, but it happened again. i think i'm getting too much hip slide. is this possible? i keep my head behind the ball, so i know i'm not changing my arc. and my ball position isn't too far back, so i don't think that's the cause either. does anybody have any drills to combat this? thanks!

Drills to combat what? Hitting the ball right? A ball going right is caused by:

a) an open clubface at impact, or
b) an out-to-in swing path

What the initial cause is, I can't tell, but a video would be useful.

Could be lots of things

- Grip
- Ball position
- Arm rotation
- Blocking shots/getting stuck

If you swing in-to-out, you want the club face to be slightly open (relative to the target, not your body) at impact, about half the amount open as your swing path. If the club face was square, you would be hitting straight-draws, while what you want is a push-draw.

The golf swing is not a natural move, at least not with the club in our hands. Here is a drill on hip slide and extension through impact. The weight of the boulder, or any other heavy object you find suitable, will cause the body to move more naturally. It will help get rid of thoughts about how far the hips move and all that, just letting the body find out how to throw the object out and up. Throw it a few times, then make the same swing with your club, imagining you are still holding this heavy object.

- Too much tension in arms/wrists on the downswing and not allowing them to release
- Dropping the right shoulder
- Pulling the arms a bit too much through the hitting area instead of letting them be pulled through via hip/shoulder rotation

Sounds like maybe your just simply getting stuck. Sometimes when your lower body is too much ahead your upper body, your arms can get stuck behind you and you will hit a block. Either your rotating with your hips too quickly. Maybe just try to consciously keep your arms in front of your chest throughout your downswing. I think that Tiger and Rory have this problem too and have talked about it online.

+1 You may have too much hip slide. While you need some lateral motion, if you slide your hips too much, your upper body may be stuck right and not able to get left... straight push.

You might not have too much hip slide. You could be faking the feeling by dropping your right shoulder down coming through impact.

Video, please? Given that feel isn't real, giving a diagnosis without seeing any of the actual evidence is bound to fail more often than it works.

This is exact same problem I have during my blocked shots. My right shoulder drops and while my hip slide is still good, the feel is increased with the drop of the shoulder which senorchipotle I think is the same for you. A video will help to prove this if it is the case and should be your fix. it certainly is mine!

I know what youre talking about, i think. I do this from time to time myself. For me, its a tempo thing. I get too agressive with my legs coming back to the ball sometimes and my hips are so far out front i get stuck on the backside. Youre only going to be able to hit a block or flip at the ball from there. If i just foucs on calming down my transition it usually goes away with the next shot.
