I bought the new Callaway FT-iZ a month ago (first weekend it came out) and when I went to the range yesterday I pulled it out of the bag and the shaft was splintered at the hosel. I went to Golf Galaxy right away and they are replacing it. When I was walking back to fill out some paper work I asked the General Manager if he has seen this happen with this club before ( I know its brand new but asked anyway). He said that he has had one of the same club (FT-iZ stiff shaft 9 deg.) come back already with the same problem.

So that makes two of the exact same club brought back to the same store in about a month.

Has anyone else heard of this with this club or had it happen to them??

Not the shaft but i've heard about issues with the weighting inside the head of the club coming loose making it sound like a baby rattle instead of a driver. someone mentioned on here a little bit ago about replacing it twice already for the same issue. perhaps with all the new tech they should've used higher tech in making a durable driver, not just long.

In my Titleist 2014 9.5" Staff bag:

Cobra Bio+ 9* Matrix White Tie X  - Taylormade SLDR 15* ATTAS 80X - Titleist 910H 19* ATTAS 100X - Taylormade '13 TP MC 4-PW PX 6.5 - Vokey TVD M 50* DG TI X100 - Vokey SM4 55 / Vokey SM5 60* DG TI S400 - Piretti Potenza II 365g

I agee - it does worry me a bit. A buddy of mind bought the FT-9 and had the issue you mentioned. I just upgraded from the FT-3 and never had ANY issues with that club. I wonder if they have changed manufacturing facilities or something. When my buddy took his in they said it was the dried epoxy that cracked off, and they actually put a sticky substance to grab the flakes of epoxy so they dont rattle. Sounds like they plan for the problem. Not sure if that is exclusive to Callaway or not.

Since Golfsmith just gave away lots of their driver after the Master, maybe Callaway is too busy to fill the orders and their quality control is down a little bit.

This is problem with house shafts, they are usually lower quality to save money and make the club more affordable for the average golfer, if you want higher quality and better performance from your driver, you'll have to go with the aftermarket shafts

Not to be a jerk but it looks like the club came with the shaft thats in your Titliest. So i dont know if its a quality issue. However I would like to optimize the shaft in the club and am not opposed to getting an aftermarket. Whats the best way to optimize, not sure if I trust the fellas at the Galaxy, ideas, experiences?

I understand what you meant, the shaft my 909Dcomp came with was the house matrix -xcon5 made for Titleist (junk shaft which I broke 2 days later), the shaft that I have now is a Aldila Voodoo svs6 (cost $200.00) bring the total cost of the driver to $500.00, the shaft probably cost $50.00 to make, but what can you do? lol I needed the driver asap for my next tournament

Now Aldila does make a house Voodoo shaft for Titleist and I use them in my 3w 5w and hybrids and they work great, so the quality in the house shaft depends on the company edit : as far as experiences go, hit a local pro shop, and the club smith can help you with shaft, flex, swing weight and fully customize the club for you

Hey,

i was the one with the "baby rattle" and yes, after 7 rounds my fti-z's weight came loose, Callaway replaced it, then with the 2nd driver, after 7 rounds the whole head flew off, except for the face, which stayed attached to the shaft. callaway replaced that one too, i'm on my 3rd fti-z, slamming it about 275, today i hit it about 320 and my ears were ringing due to the sound at impact (i love it) Anyway, i think i have 3 rounds on this driver, maybe the lucky number is 7........... hopefully not, but good luck man...... i think its a manufactures defect in production.... i also have a 3 and 5 wood and a 3 hybrid, no problems with them. i'm actually thinking about getting a 4h as well . again, good luck

In My Bag:
Driver: TaylorMade R11 10.5 UST Shaft

thanks for the input - I hope i dont have to go through this again - two shafts should be enough - shouldnt it? ha!

well hopefully this will be my last issue - I am thinking of getting a different shaft in later this year when I am more in tune with the club - the last thing i want to do is go through the process of getting fit for a new shaft when I am making bad swings.

I have had exactly the same issue twice now.  Both times the shaft has split just above the hosel.  The first time it went back to Callaway and was replaced FOC but the club is now about 3 years old, so I'll have to replace it myself.  Not happy.

Did they give you the exact same shaft?

Mine split above the hosel with the voodoo shaft..  i sent it in.. a week later came back with a completely different shaft. stronger and a bit thicker. been great for me.

Wonder if it's just the shaft..
