The rapture is happened!

It looks cool, and the marketing seems quite good, but I can't imagine it being that much better than the G5. Is there going to be a review on this site, and/or has anyone tried it out?

Thanks

edit: seems to be just for preorder at the moment.. didn't realize people do that with golf clubs

Ping doesn't care about new media. From what I've heard, they don't care much for old media either. They live in a bubble, those Ping fellows.

I hit the new rapture stuff yesterday at a demo day. I know the local Ping rep pretty well so I got to compare my G-5 driver vs. The Rapture driver on their launch monitor. The numbers came out pretty close. The driver is nice, it looks a lot like the G5. The big improvements with the rapture I saw were in the hybrid line. I never liked the G5 hybrids because of the offset. The new rapture hybrids set up square and are really nice. The rapture fairway woods are also an improvement over the G5. I absolutely bombed the 3 wood. It is an all titanium head so it's slightly bigger than the head on my current 3 wood but I was able to hit it off the deck with no problem. And since I really hit my 3 wood off a tee more than the ground I like the larger head. Overall, I thought the rapture line was very good and really easy to hit.

I have the G5 and really like it. I also had a Launcher Comp (composite crown). It appears the Rapture is the G5 with a composite crown (just like the Launcher Comp was the Launcher with a composite crown). I think they hit the same. The composite crown is a disadvantage if you want to pull a shaft and save it. You can't get too much heat there or you'll melt the crown. Safe way is cut the shaft and drill it out (no heat) but then you ruin the old shaft. I'm sticking with all metal heads for this reason since I can't notice any great advantage to these composite crowns.

The Rapture redistributed 10 grams of weight lower and closer to the heel of the club. It doesn't sound like a lot but I noticed the head wanted to turn over more than my G5 does. That could be the shaft too or my imagination, but I commented on it before he told me of the change. Good club though and the entire crown is not composite so the shaft change shouldn't be as tricky as in other composite heads.

Just out of curiosity: where does the Rupture line fit in their line of irons? Is it in between the G5 and I5? Also, is it is considered game improvement, player improvement, player...?

Tommy, I think the rions are on par with the G5 ones... they look very similar. Ping has released a more players iron, the s58 I believe it is called, along with the Rapture series...

I hit the Rapture driver last night and it was all right.. nothing special. Sortof like the improvement from NHL 95 to NHL 96. I can't wait for the older models to drop down in price for next season.

The rapture irons look like a G5 and an I5 combined and are game improvement irons. If someone is looking for a ping players iron they need to hit the new redesigned s59

Well I was able to take the Rapture and the G5 out to my range yesterday. The Rapture had the new Aldila VS Proto 65 stiff and the G5 had the old Aldila NV Green 65 stiff. Both were 9 degrees. I was all ready to purchase the Rapture but I found it spongy and not nearly as hot feeling as the G5. It could have just been the shaft but I much preferred the G5. The sound was better and the ball flight was better. The G5 came off higher for me and travelled further in the air. I chalk all this up to the G5 just being a better match to my swing though. I have had 2 of the exact same Callaway drivers before and each was completely different. I would not hesitate to try the Rapture but for my money (and swing), its not worth it.

When it all comes down to it, I don't know if I could own a club called the "Rapture." Sounds like a romance novel. I'd have to go find a Fabio headcover.

Just get a bunch of long dirty blonde hair and glue it to the top of the headcover that comes with it. It will deter theft, too.

I had a G5 and now the rapture. With the Launch Monitor I was getting 25 more yards with it.

Thats good to hear. I will be interested to hear what you get in real world situations. I had both on the driving range and for one round of golf. I had no appreciable difference in distance whatsoever and maybe a bit more with the G5. For me it all comes down to launch angle and spin rate and the Rapture did not fit me nearly as well.

  • 3 weeks later...

I got the 6-9 irons and the hybrid, and must say I'm impressed so far.
Great feel, not as top heavy as I thought they'd be (they have a wide sole), and the hybrid feels better than most I've used.
Lovely Jubbly.

Haven't taken them on the course yet (got them on Tuesday), but they should be good (pairing them with my TP Reds ).

I just got a 10.5 Rapture and had it fitted with an Aldila NVS 350 Regular shaft, and had an inch cut off it. Now I only swing in the 80 to 90 MPH range, but I'm hitting the ball DEAD STRAIGHT and easily averaging over 250 yards.

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
