Okay, so I've been trying to come up with a way to set my wrists really early and consistently because it seems to me a very important factor in the swing.

Am I right in assuming the wrists should cock the way a waiter carries a tray at the top of the swing?

Any advice/tips/insight on how to do this more consistently and easier? anything ? thank you.

if you mean bent to the left or right you I think you are wrong.

If you address the ball normally you should be able to see the proper wrist cock if you stay at address and hing your wrists to pick the club straight up towards your face but not moving your arms, kinda like drinking a beer. You can then just turn your shoulders and get to the top. Obviously you don't want to do this in your swing during a round, but during the PGA one player acually was cocking his wrists like this, then turning his shoulders and swinging. The reason he was doing this was because of a wrist injury and it was the only way he could swing, I tried it at the range and you can actually hit the ball pretty good doing it, but I would only use it to check to see if they are in the right position. There is no subsitute to a pro however, a 1/2 hour lesson should give you a good refresher on the basics. Some people cup the wrist to the right or left, it opens and closes the club but your most likely good with square. my .02

I don't think it should be flat or parallel to the ground like your have are carrying something flat. I would think you would want it to not change the angle to the face that you have at address, flat would seem to open the club up don't you think?

To be clear by flat at the top I mean closer to perpendicular to the forearm. Perhaps a big forward press moves your closer to this condition, but I have been trying to get rid of most of my forward press.

If you answer the following question correctly, skip this article, because you understand wrist cock. However, if you answer incorrectly, be prepared to see through the illusion that is keeping you from playing good golf.
The Question: How does the right wrist correctly cock in the golf swing? Demonstrate your answer by extending your right arm in front of you, as in reaching out to shake some body’s hand. Now, cock the right wrist, as it should in your swing.

The Answer: If you bent the right wrist back on itself, forming a concave at the back of the wrist, then you are correct. But if you angled the wrist up to the sky, with the back of the wrist essentially flat, then you have been fooled by some of slight-of-hand; it sure looks like that should happen! Read on, and your game will improve.

The proper bending back of a golfers right wrist is not unique to golf; a baseball pitcher will do the same thing when throwing a fastball, or a tennis player when delivering a serve. The illusion comes because the left wrist does cock upwards. It would seem inconceivable that one wrist cocks back while the other cocks up; but that’s exactly what happens. The reason this is possible is explained in the grip illusion section; if the palms opposed each other, you could cock the wrists in the same direction. Thumbs-on- top and palms opposing go hand-in-hand with faulty wrist cock, and weak golf.

The correct move can be illustrated by the age-old image of the right arm holding a tray at the top of the swing. Assume that position, and just turn around and look. The right wrist will be bent back. Now this image can be further refined; even more accurate would be the image of reaching back with your right hand while in the shower, and grasping the shower curtain rod.

To practice proper wrist cock, take a 7 iron and assume your stance. Then right in front of you, bend back your right wrist, while cocking up the left. The back of your left wrist should be relatively flat. (If this seems awkward or even impossible, I can assure you that your grip is faulty). From this pre-cocked position, swing the club back and strike the ball. Good hand, wrist, and arm swing is the lifeblood of a good swing.

The right wrist bends back a little bit. It does not bend back much - around thirty degrees, tops. And that's based on looking at my own swing as well as the swings of PGA Tour pros.

That is interesting because I just a had a lesson a week and a half ago and the PGA pro did not say i needed to focus on bending the wright wrist back and when I asked him about the wrist cock he explained that everything hinges maintaining the wrist angles you have at address. I honestly never focused on the right wrist angle as I understood that the left side should be doing most of the work. I guess I have a weak golf swing.

Here is what golfonline says in this link
that goes against the awareness golf method.

Focus On The Right Hand

The key to a delayed wrist cock is in the right hand. It must cock at the top of the swing and remain cocked until the last possible moment during the downswing.

To learn the feeling, stand erect and bend your right arm at the elbow as if you were reaching to shake somebody's hand. Flex the wrist so the thumb points back toward your chest. That's a fully-cocked position.

Add your left hand and make an imaginary grip. This is the wrist cock you want at the top of your backswing. Make some practice swings, first without a club then with a club, feeling the right wrist cock and uncock.

Perhaps my swing isn't weak

Let's look at some good players:

http://www.golfdigest.com/instruction/swingsequences/

See below: most appear to be about 20-30° bent back. It's slight, but it's there. Freddy seems to have the least wrist cock, but his club is also well across the line and his right arm is farthest from perpendicular of those shown.
