I "was" a 10 HI, now I am frequenting +100 rounds. I still hit my driver, irons and wedges well. My problem is with distances. I just recently lost my eyesight in my right eye and am right eye dominant, so this has really screwed up my depth perception. So my short game is all to hell. Has anyone else experienced this issue, and what could I possibly do to find a feel for distance in the less than 50 yrd. game. Frustration has really put a damper on the fun I used to have. I don't want to quit golf, but I am almost ready to.
Any input on the subject is appreciated.

that really sucks, I think my biggest fear is to have my sight go away. On the bright side, at least you can still see

as for golf, what about a laser rangefinder for the 50-30 yard shots... then work on the range to get back your feel for those distances, measuring off with the rangefinder. For the closer in distances, walk them off, get a feel for how far you need to hit the ball. Walk off your long puts and feel the slope with your feet.

i don't know if the above will work, but I really hope you can get if figured out.

Cheers, Allan

Born (forceps injury) legally blind in my left eye (non dominate) play on my friend! You will get it back! Your body will adapt! Won't be easy....but no reason to give up the game! Maybe take a step back and set some intermediate goals from where you currently are! Then push for those goals!

I definitely recommend a laser rangefinder. I use mine whenever I'm going for the green, so off every par 3 tee, and everywhere within 150 yards of the hole.
It only take a second to use, so it's not much of an inconvenience and doesn't slow down play.

There's nothing worse than hitting an excellent shot, only for the ball to fly miles over the green, or stop short of it!

That hurts, we can tell distances because our eyes are a certain distance apart that create two images that are offset, which creates a 3-D world., theres actually a blind spot for us, i believe its about 7 inches away from the eyes. Put a black dot on a piece of paper and slowly bring it towards your face at eye height, the dot will dissappear, ;b

I would suggest going from a feel player to a numbers player. Get a GPS unit or laser range finder and start getting your feel for the numbers agains, rather than using eyesight. The tough spot will be trying to maintain a proper swing, you probably lost alot of hand eye cordination now. So it will be more imparitive to drill your swing into your muscle memory and learn how to maintain balance with only eye sight in one eye. The hardest part will be putting. I would pace off ever putt and try to get some reference in your mind, like 5 paces is this feel. Its more of rewriting how your mind percieves things by making it relate to something else than depth perception. It will take some time but people adapt pretty well to many things.

Give it time. Your mind will adjust. I'd try to focus on being outside and just enjoying the time outside. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself.

Good luck.

I didn't lose site in one eye, but I don't have any depth perception.

I had two surgeries on my left eye when I was a kid and somewhere along the way the ability for my eyes to work together vanished. Never understood this until I was in HS and couldnt' hit "real" curveball for the life of me. Turns out it was that I couldn't tell the ball was actually dropping away from me. Would swing about a foot over the ball every time.

But one thing that did really help my golf game was buying a rangefinder. I now know how far I hit each club and can tell exactly how far I need to hit each club.

And I use it inside a hundred on atleast half my shots. Pretty much hit the same club inside a hundred to. I think it just helps me "dial in" my wedge.

+1 A bad day golfing is better than most.

Long term, though you will improve. If you still have your long game, then you still have good hand/eye coordination. Spend a lot of time with the wedge and putter and I bet your body will adapt. Teach your body what a 30 or 50 etc yard swing feels like and know what the number is.

I'm an armchair student of psychology so I think the first problem is not golf but dealing with the loss of sight in your right eye. An important question is when did it happened?

My advice is to forget about score and only play practice rounds or if it's too early for that, just go to the driving range for a while. It's very possible that another aspect of the game will improve with time; i.e. feel, better perception of your swing path, etc.

Give it time and don't pressure yourself.

You should ask your doctors if it possible to retrain your brain to become left eye dominant. For your short game, to help with distance maybe try pacing it off. And to help replace the lost stereo vision maybe walk a full circle around the flag? A lot of good golfers with both eyes do this anyways. If the rest of your game is pretty quick, your round might still take less time then a lot of Sunday golfers.

It's only considered quitting if you hate the game and want out. If you're walking away from something you love because something else is stopping you, then you've been beat, plain and simple.

I'll be as sorry for your circumstance as you want me to be but there are people out there who have learned to play with missing (multiple) limbs. Think how much sweeter a good score will feel now that you have to work harder for it.

Put down your steaming cup of 'woe is me', get a rangefinder, maybe take some lessons to teach you some compensating techniques and I'll see you on the first tee.

First and foremost buy a laser range finder. Find yourself a football field or other place you can measure off yardage from 10-15 yards. Make targets at each of these distances, get your shag bag and take your wedges. I carry a 60, 56, 52 and 48pw. Now learn how far a 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full swing goes. Take some masking tape and write each of these distances on your shafts. I.E. a 1/4 swing 60 goes 20 yards. You will have to become consistent in your take aways and disciplined in your swing lengths. I think this is a variation of what Pelz teaches. If you are really comitted to the game, lay down a couple grand and go to one of Pelz's short game academies.. I would bet they could solve your problem. A lo of places wont let you practice on their grass,, I used to carry a piece of driving range turf with me when I wanted to practice, of course that was in Iraq, where I did a similar process as above.

I have no vision in my left eye over a few feet. I am right eye dominant and play right handed. I have learned over time how to judge distance, I believe you will also. You will become more aware of other factors to help you judge, color variation, a feel for the angles. It is almost like visualizing the trajectory of a shot in your head and then feeling that shot. You can't rely on the lifetime of feedback from bifocal vision which has made distance perception instinctive, but you can regain a large measure in a reasonably short time.

Thanks to you guys for the ideas. I'm not going to give up, but I will have to try and figure out a way to get round the issue. I don't think all (double_j)here understand why this is an issue, I am not looking for pity. I am frustrated and only looking for ideas to help me find my way back in my golf game. Quitting is only a last resort, and only if I lose the enjoyment of the game.
Just so everyone understands, I was virtually blind in my left eye already due to poor eyesigh and an injury many years ago. My new problem was caused by the loss of sight in my "good" eye. This vision loss was caused by a retinal embolism. Currently, outside 90-100 yds I can't distinguish the flag from the surroundings without a sighting device.
Now back to golf. I have been working hard on putting. Not too bad until I get outside of 10 feet or so. Outside of that then everything tends to go left, as do all of my other shots. I understand that the brain triangulates the line of sight from each eye and compensates accordingly to provide a true line of sight. When I set up over a shot, my alignment feels good and looks right. Then I lay a club across my shoulders to check it and its way left. I adjust for the alignment, then my mind tries to compensate the swing because the correct alignment doesn't look correct. It's INSANE!

Again guys, thanks for all the positive input.

    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
