Who is the idiot reporter that wants to get Sergio's opinion on anything??? It takes two to tango ( or interview, as the case may be) and whomever is taking up precious time to get Sergio's thoughts might want to rethink his career choice...

CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland (Reuters) - The day before Michelle Wie makes her European Tour debut, Sergio Garcia raised doubts on Wednesday about the 16-year-old prodigy's chances of ever winning a men's event. He said it was unlikely any woman would win on the men's circuit. "Never say never," Garcia said at a news conference before beginning the defense of his European Masters title. But I think there is a big chance it may not happen."

...not sure I would argue with him. While I think Wie can match the men with her Driver and Irons, her putting can't hang with the big boys. Sorenstam has the whole package, I just don't think she can match a PGA tourney with say 10 of the top 25 in the field. I don't think there is a women out there that can win on the PGA tour with any sort of a strong field. Qualify yes, win no. Give Wie a couple of years to learn how to putt under Major Championship strain and she might be able to give the field at Quad Cities Open a run for their money.

I think everyone is getting ahead of themselves. I want to know if Wie can win on the LPGA before we even start to think about her winning on the men's tour.

Also, I don't think Sergio was anything but honest. He didn't trash Michelle Wie or the LPGA, just gave his opinion.

and I don't mind hearing what Sergio has to say...he's one of the best players in the game, his opinion is just as relevant as any other top player's

Also, read the whole story

Garcia believes Wie's participation is good for the men's game, however. "I think anything that helps the game is good for golf, anything, no matter what. "It might not help the guy she has taken the (playing) spot from this week but it might help him in the future."

Like others have said, he hasn't said anything that's not true.

She should concentrate on her own tour and winning there before trying to win on the men's.

And again... she's played all she's allowed on the LPGA tour this year.

She still hasn't won anything yet. Then again, it wouldn't matter if she won five tournaments this year, she still wouldn't be able to win on the PGA Tour. I still don't think she can make a cut on the PGA Tour.

Not arguing against that point. Just an answer to the "She needs to play more on the LPGA before competing against the men" argument.

And like Sergio, I say "Never say never." Some of the men's tournaments she plays don't necessarily have the strongest fields. I don't see her making a cut anytime soon, but I think she'll make one eventually. Either way, she's honing her skills.

Because she's not a full member.

Will be more interesting for me once she is a full member and can compete in a full quota. Don't get me wrong, I think she's great forthe game - the ladies game - and that she should stick to her own tour and not take away a pay day for someone who would have a chance of making the cut. I stand to be proven wrong this weekend, but I just can't see it happening.

The thing is, these sponsor exemptions she's getting usually go to some guy who doesn't stand a chance of making the cut either (like Arnold Palmer's 18-year old grandson, Sam Saunders, at Bay Hill this year). Exemptions are usually given out as favors, or exposure, or to some old coot that won the tournament years ago. Wie has as much a chance this week as Saunders had at Bay Hill to make a cut.

That may be true to a certain extent - I still don't like it.

I mean, how would the LPGA like it if Tiger went and played on their tour..?? Oh he can't as they have a clause saying competitors have to be women don't they? Smacks of double standards to me

For the record, Michelle Wie can't hang with the men off the tee either.

http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1300 She wouldn't even be leading the LPGA in driving distance if she was a member.

Wow.

By that logic, Michael Jordan should've been allowed to play in the WNBA, or Roger Federer on the Women's Tour. It doesn't hold water because the given is that the PGA tour is superior to the LPGA. No one is disputing that. Better, stronger athletes that hit it farther. Because some PGA events allow amateurs to compete, does that mean that PGA players should be allowed to compete in amateur events?

Just for the record, Sergio didn't say anything that was wasn't the truth. I'll just leave it at that.

Stephen Ames didn't say anything wrong before the match with Tiger. He was hitting his driver all over the place and in a match play 18 hole ANYTHING can happen. Was it wrong? No. Should he rather shup up? 9&8

There is a difference between saying something WRONG and saying something that shouldn't be said, especially when you talk to the media. Read the statement one of Michelle playing partners made. That's class. Sergio is a dope.

...not sure I would argue with him. While I think Wie can match the men with her Driver and Irons, her putting can't hang with the big boys.

I think it's important to be realistic. Her putting held her back quite a bit at one tournament - the US Open qualifier. At the U.S. Women's Open, her putting and short game were the only things keeping her in the thing. She couldn't find the 50-yard-wide fairways off the tee and her iron game was - at times - equally as bad. One part of her game is off every time she plays, yet she still manages to finish high (against the women).

The putting thing was true a few times. But even Tiger has had off weeks with his putter.
Sorenstam has the whole package,

You wanna talk bad putters, Sorenstam is a streaky putter at best. When she's playing well, it's because she's putting really well. When she's playing badly - and she's done a lot of that this year too - it's largely her putter that she can blame. She three-putts more than Phil Mickelson!

As for Sergio, I guess he's somewhat of an expert on the unfulfilled promise of youth, eh? But when did he become Mark Hensby?

    • You might want to try a can of Bar Keepers Friend. Yes, it is abrasive, so just wet a sponge and dab it on. It has oxalic acid (no bleach like "Comet" kitchen cleanser), and it works wonders on stainless steel and other metals. Try it on a small area first to see what happens.
    • Fair   My uneducated thought: the big miss is the penalty area. If you want to optimize score, missing into the bunker (likely 5) is better than missing right into the penalty (possible 6). With that, your strategy seems sound and if you hit a committed shot, you get a bunker 5% of the time, take your medicine and hopefully get a putt for par but accept bogey. You may find yourself in a penalty situation 2-3% of the time and accept the associated outcome. The vast majority of the time though you are giving yourself a good approach shot into the green.
