so i played with my buddy today at encino (all the LA locals will know what course i speak of) went off at twilight. my buddy has been playing serious golf for the past year. Before the round i told him we would be putting everything out and no mulligans allowed (unless it was a provisional) so we both shoot E on the front. (i lipped out a 5 footer on 9 for par... woulda been -1 for the front 9.) wound up shooting -1 for the round while still leaving a couple shots out on the course.. my buddy shot 75. I honestly think he is a bundle of raw potential..i was so impressed with the way he handled his round (in the sense that its hard to realize how many 3 footers for par there are in a round cuz many people rake 3 foot putts). today was in many ways a breakthrough for me with my game as i am trying to get my game to the point where it is highly competitive and the fact that i am finally able to bring in a round under par means so much to me. i am playing in LA city championship and hope to bring the same game to that tournament as I had today. I am fully aware that tourney golf is an entirely different animal when compared to normal course golf but i strongly believe that at that level, score comes down to how well a player checks his emotions and his mind. the more nervous i get.. the more free i want to swing.... that is the mindset i am going to bring to the tournament. just wanted to share with my fellow sandtrap forum members the round i had today and that no matter how down on yourself you get.. you are always as good as the best shot u have ever hit... never forget that..play well compadres!!

Good job man! I also had a killer round on Monday, 77, at Legends: Heathland in Myrtle Beach, SC. Won my tournament! Pretty good compared to my handicap!

Cool.

in the sense that its hard to realize how many 3 footers for par there are in a round cuz many people rake 3 foot putts.

Yep. When I watch someone just step up and tap at a three footer likes it's a done deal or do the through-the-legs shot, I think what a waste. That's a golden opportunity to practice. Don't just make the putt, make it exactly where you want the putt to go; middle, left edge, right edge, etc. If I can get the ball exactly on line at 3' then the only variable for a six footer is the read.

Whoever came up with the saying, "A bad day of golf is better than a good day at work", is a moron.

Il be in the same situation as you soon but next year have over 10 tourneys that Im eyeing. Ive played hockey and baseball and have had many pressure situations like a shootout in my high school playoffs where I had to score to keep my team alive (did by the way) to baseball up to the plate with the game in my hands... I think its how you handle pressure. Try playing a round with a stranger one day and block out everything on every shot. If you can block it all out or as Kevin Costner would say in For the Love of the game .... "Clear the Mechanism" you should be alright... Regardless good luck in the open

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
