Do you make new friends on the golf course during casual rounds and local tournaments?

Not in the sense that we start making arrangements to play again, but for the four or so hours we do play together, I try to be a good friend. That instant camaraderie is one of the things I like best about golf.

I have... once met a guy on the range. He was practicing behind me and I could hear from the sound of him hitting balls that he was more than pretty good.

I introduced myself and we went out on the course for a round. Turned out he played on the Nike and Canadian Tour at the time. In an even wierder twist of fate, turns out he married one of my best friends from high school... this was 12 years later and the other side of the country. Very small world, and we ended up becoming family friends.

I've met people on the course and made arrangements to play again, but I think that's about it other than the above story.

i have played w many strangers, but never met again for a round

this might sound gay, but i wish i did meet someone who was a decent player to golf w again
none of my buddies are very good (i dont hold it against them, its all about having fun)
but i dont have anyone to really "compete" w for fun
there is one dude at our course in our mens league that is a +1.2 that i wouldnt mind golfing with..........but i feel like I would hold him up or something

It sure does not. It's something men need to realize - once we're out of high school or college, it's really hard to make any kind of connection, let alone friendship, with other guys beyond the playing field. Most guys would rather punch you in the face as have a beer with you - it's in our genetic code. Gotta protect the women and children from potential threats.

I have made "friends" but not too often it goes beyond the 18th hole. Maybe a beer or two in the clubhouse, and possibly even another tee time booked in the future. I'm not the greatest friend to my real life friends - I won't call, I'll forget your birthday, I'll forget to ask how your kids are doing - so the 4-5 hour commitment of a round of golf fits my personality. Maybe I'm afraid of getting accustomed to the same playing partners then starting over when they move. I used to play regularly with some fairly decent players when I lived in Edmonton, but most of them moved away for work and family, then eventually I did too. PS. Did you know the RCGA has some tools on their website to make golf connections (by region and by handicap) - at least the AGA does - the SGA probably has something similar? I haven't tried it yet though, because of course I don't want to seem g-a- ...

I have made many friends on the course. The friendships are now outside of golf and everyone still gets together for parties. We all met on the golf course - everyone started out showing up on Saturday mornings as singles.

We dont golf together as much anymore because they have all left the club (jobs and economy have cut club membership out of their budgets)

No it doesn't sound gay hoping to meet a player with the same handicap level. It sounds gay if you expect to see the same guy over and over again.

Me too, I work a 12 hour swing shift and have several days off during the week, so other than the guys I work with everybody else is at work(because they work normal schedules). So I have to count on the old retired guys if I want anybody to play with...oh well, they usually have a good sense of humor and don't take things too seriously

Joining a league is a great way to make friends, new people to play with, at the course where the friendship doesn't leave the course. My dad plays in two different leagues each week. I've been tagging along, playing a few holes as I can for practice, on a regular basis for a few weeks now and have met several interesting people I'd like to play with in the future.. and some I'd rather not. I'm looking forward to joining both leagues next year once I am playing better.
