only six years in the making, eh. i was playing from the blues (which are actually the tips, as that course doesn't even have the gold tees anymore). i only really had one straight up bad shot the whole round - i pull-hooked my approach on 14, which brought me that lovely double bogey. last three holes were pretty exciting for me, though - chipped in from 5 feet off the green on 16, sank a 40 foot putt on 17, and reached the green in two and 2-putted for birdie on 18. i'm proud of myself.

Nice.

I kinda like how you fill out your score card. Much easier to figure out your final score. Mine looks soooo jumboed with too many statistics, but I like to keep track of them.

Nice.

For the record, you don't fill out your own scorecard. And...this is never the way to score. The OP needs to make sure that the guy who marked his card learns how to do it properly. Good round.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

great round bro

I keep score similar to that
I put my score, then how many over/under I am for the round under the actual score
so a Par 4 is 0, then if i birdie 3 i am -1 for the round etc...im sure u get it

anyways, congrats on the round dude
Im waiting for my first PAR round of the year - VERY PATIENTLY!!!! ( ^^^^ hear that golf god's....... PATIENTLY.....)

regarding how i keep score, that's just my shorthand method when i'm playing a casual round, either by myself or with a couple of friends. a friend of mine showed me that years ago, and i said "wow, that's a whole lot quicker and easier to tally up at the end of a round." but if i'm playing in a tournament, of course i adhere to the "official" way of keeping score, which as mentioned is the other guy marking your card, and you his, and writing down 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. for the hole.

and thank you for the kind words everyone. hopefully before too long i'll be able to get that elusive under-par round. *fingers crossed*

great round bro

I do the same thing but i do it in regards to bogey golf, (it makes me feel better about myself). If I bogey the hole I get to act like I got a par as far as +/- is concerned. I do keep another row for my actual score (3,4,5,6,7,8,9) but at any moment I can tell how I am doing. A good round for me is 89 so it works out because on a par 72 a bogey golf round is 90 so if i finish in the negative's I know I had a good round for me.

With scorekeeping like that how could he not? Which is why I'd never be tempted to score like that because I'd definitely choke! Which is why I, and it sounds like others too, are all the more impressed!

Congrats!

  • 5 months later...
meanwhile, almost six months later, i finally shot my first sub-par round today. different course from the one i par'd when i started this thread - today's course was a pretty short one, only about 5300 yards and a par 70, but pretty tight. finished the front nine at three over par, but then shot four under par on the back nine. huzzah!

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
