So, the other day I shot my best score to date while playing with a group of guys I did not know. One of them had a golf gps and I noticed some considerable differences between the course markings and what the gps said. I also saw that some of my guesses based on yardage markers were off by enough to make a difference.

With that said i would like to look into a gps or rangefinder. I don't need anything fancy, just yardages to the front, middle, and back of the green. I do not have a smartphone so that is not an option and would prefer to not pay an annual fee, or at least nothing outrageous. On a limited budget. Thanks for any thoughts or opinions.

LaserLink claims that the rangefinder is more efficient than GPS for use by golfers.

Anyone agree or disagree with LL claims of superiority of rangefinders? I don't own either at this time.

Yeah saw that one. Looks pretty nice. Anyone have experience with the Izzo Swami? It is only $100 w/ $10 annual fee. It just has the basic stuff I want and they do have all the local courses I play.

I have the Bushnell Neo. It's a little smaller version of the Yardage Pro. I love it. You need to pay the $35 dollars or so to download the courses. You can download 100 courses over the year and then you never have to pay the fee again unless you want to. I have found it to be very accurate and extremely helpful. It not only tell front, middle, and back of greens, but it will also let you get the exact distance of each shot you take. If you don't want something fancy, the price is right and it's a great little gadget.

A positive attitude will not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Good to know, thanks. Now I have a few ideas to check into.

For a handheld GPS, I would only ask how long it takes to get a fix on where you are in relation to the course?

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

I had been looking around for a while now as well for a GPS. And a relatively inexpensive one that did not have an annual fee or if it did wasn't that expensive. All I wanted was distances to pin. Many of the courses I play do not have bunkers or alot of water hazards to deal with.

I settled on the Izzo Swami. It basically came down to courses. I considered the Neo but the Bushnell database seemed to be missing alot of the courses that I needed in my area. The Swami had them all.

I am still waiting on the package to arrive. I based my purchase on the 62 out of 66 positive reviews on Amazon.

Here is a good youtube review of the Swami.

    • The dreaded 6 o'clock shadow. 🤣
    • 47+49 for a 96. Just lost it today. Two way miss off the tee. Could not hit a decent iron. Three putted like at least 8 holes. Not good when the short game is the best part of the day 😭😭
    • Phillyk is very close by. Ok, I understand how the watch and tags are meant to be used, but I was just curious how it actually works. I can't really think of any other way than what I mentioned above. No worries. If it works it works. I'll probably pick one up. My co-worker mentioned a free app called 18 Birdies which offers similar services. However I personally do not like keeping my phone in my pocket while golfing, nor do I want to be clicking around on the phone while out on the course. I toss my phone in my bag and leave it there until I am done golfing. Tapping a club head to a watch seems wat more convenient.
    • Yes, but not always the case. IMHO, green speeds are a huge variable and can effect score variation from week to week or month to month significantly. Our own course that is running at about 8-9 depending on the week/day, can run up to 12 (no kidding) in peak months around certain event, and most like me score 3-4 shots higher on an average, missing a lot of 3-4 footers. There are any PCC adjustments that I am aware of. Have you every played their course? I am betting $20 you will find some answers if you haven't already.
