Has anyone else noticed that many of the Korean LPGA players always wear long sleeves(regardless of weather conditions)? ..usually under their 'golf shirts'. Does anyone know why they do this?

Must be cultural....I've noticed Korean men doing the same around here. Me being culturally naive and knowing that it's close to 100 degrees, I don't see how they can be comfortable, but hey, if they like it.....I love it.

in the asian culture, the shade of skin is an indicator of social status. the wealthier a person, the lighter their skin should be hypothetically cause they work in an office, etc. the darker skinned people are looked down upon as manual laborers. it's really stupid, but that's the gist of it.

Yup, that is exactly what it is. Before I got married, I would wear golf shirt and shorts to play golf. Now my Korean wife would never would allow me to play if I didn't wear a long sleeve shirt, even in 90*+ weather. So she buys me a really light, breathable long sleeve shirts for me to wear. It is very comfortable. In fact, it is actually cooler wearing it because it keeps the direct sun off the skin. I was really surprised the first time I wore them.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

thanks for the insight.. I figured it was cultural, just wondering. btw, Senorchipotle: I learned to play at Tenison back in the 70's and often still play there and Cedar Crest. Nice Munis.

lol... i had a couple korean and japanese friends while studying in france a few years back. the japanese girls didn't even acknowledge the korean girls even though we had the same classes. and neither would really go out and do anything active during the heat of the day. they have virtually nothing in common with our western cultures. a few here and there would break the mold and try to assimilate with the rest of us, but it was extremely rare.

All of us that do a lot of fishing in the southeast wear long sleeve shirts for sun protection. There are many new fabrics that are "breathable" and soft are not uncomfortable. You may see them in the Columbia and Patagonia sites.
Was wondering, since all the talk about melanoma, how long before golfers would start using them
Unfortunately, most of the good ones made for fishing do not have collars

Being Asian myself, I can say that it's mostly, if not all, about beauty. Non-American born Asians prefer girls with white fine skin as opposed to tanned one. I think this applies to most east and southeast Asia. Not sure about other regions.

For some genetic reason or whatever, Asians won't become tanned. They just turn black and that doesn't suit Asian eyes. I guess Michelle Wie is an exception.

An important factor that rstyle hit upon is that Asians in general appreciate their skin. They don't want wrinkled, sun baked skin, nor are too fond of skin cancer. Therefore long sleeves to cover themselves up better. Some companies these days even make sleeves out of their "dry" material. http://store.nike.com/index.jsp?coun...34/pgid-197336 No sweating nor overheating.

man, i've seen lots of stuff in my day, but i have yet to see a black asian! by asian, i mean orient, not indian peninsula and surrounding areas. the darkest i've seen are laosians, but they're pretty damn dark to begin with. i honestly think it boils down to social heirarchy, just like india, america, europe, and the rest of the world. people are inherently exclusive, so they look for something to separate themselves.

orient. lol

what's so funny? i know ''oriental'' has a certain negative connotation, which is what happens when speech becomes overly PC. but the SE asian haplogroup are by definitian orientals. for the life of me i can't see how that's become a racist terminology. we can call someone from france a frenchman, but god forbid you call someone from china a chinaman.

You also can easily find asian women who wear a long sleeve for only left arm and drive a car in southern california or other southern states. I am guessing if they are at Australia, they probably wear it on right arm.

you answered your own question. oriental has a certain negative connotation, just as "negro" has its own negative connotation. They are both rooted from non racist terms but through history, they now have negative connotations. accept it.

calling an asian person oriental is equivalent to calling a black man negro. they're both outdated terms. has nothing to do with becoming overly PC. Don't start that PC arguement because I'm sure theres a lot of people who still use the "n" word regularly who would make the same PC arguement. btw. in historical context, orient was a term actually used to describe the middle eastern region, not the far eastern region we now commonly know as asia.

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
