So I've been having problems with my drive. I hit it very inconsistently but has solid contact with irons. So I went to the range today and tried to narrow my stance a little bit after reading about the feet together drill. And to my surprise, I was making a lot better contact.

What do you guys think about having a narrow stance for your driver swing compared to having a more wide stance? What do you think are the pros and cons?

I recently shortened my stance quite a bit with driver. I find that it helps me stay balanced better through impact and follow through so I like it. Of course I previously used a very wide stance with driver. I think you can lose stability if you go too wide or too narrow. Just have to practice until you find what stance suits you best.

Yea I feel like im taking more of a natural swing with better shoulder turn. I think I got caught up in hearing about having a wider base got more power and stability. But tonight it just felt a lot more comfortable. I just hope it wasn't a novelty thing and that's why I'm asking I guess a sort of confirmation on why it felt "right"

I smash with a narrow stance. I feel like I get a better turn and am able to make a more complete follow through. I am very flexible so I can still do it with a wider stance, just feels better narrow.

Jim Hardy--one plane/two plane swing theory

One planers= wide stance
two planer= narrow stance

Me --I'm a 2 planer wide narrow stance. My balance (a vital key to a good swing) is much better.

Really???? I have a narrow stance..shoulder width apart...and I swing one plane. I found that I gained more control on the ball as well as distance by narrowing down my swing. When I started playing last year all I wanted to do was kill the ball, so I read about widening my stance, raising tee height, and forward placement worked for distance, it made my huge slice extremely pronounced..somewhat of a push slice! I have since changed to a narrower stance and it has allowed me to turn further and make better contact....and as a result I am getting the smash factor that I was looking for before, but much more controlled.
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

  • 5 years later...

I realise this is an old post but...

during the past week been trying different stances, ball position,  to reduce driver slice.

A more narrow stance, ball an inch further back, the past couple games (actually, trying this for all club full swings) has really straightend my shots, more distance, better accuracy

Might be because you are turning your hips better and in better balance?

Not much on the mechanics but the club face must be hitting the ball with less outside/in. Gonna stick with this for awhile, until some other part of my mechanics screws up, lol

Sounds like you did the right thing. . .

You might want to take some video and save it for your records so you can always remember what you did, or even get some help from people if you get stuck in the future.

If I remember correctly, a narrow stance helps transfer weight easier. Combine that with moving the ball a bit back, and that's a good way to hit more from the inside.

Just be careful not to move it too far back.

Thanks.

Yup. Ive noticed Small changes make big differences.

I'm lucky, my setup routine is always the same so I remember any changes I make. I find it easier to repeat anything I've changed.
