what is best free Golf GPS application

So i have a blackberry curve and recently downloaded freecaddie . Its an amazing app gives me distance to the front, center and back of the green. But I was wondering if you guys know of a "free" GPS app that would actually let me measure my shot distance or give me distance to hazards, end of fairway etc. I know you get what you pay for but still wondering if I am missing out on something much more interesting than freecaddie.

Re: what is best free Golf GPS application

I too have a Blackberry (Storm) and from what I've seen with the free golf gps apps that I've tried, all you're going to get is basic distances. I haven't tried them all, however, since I've become quite jaded. Several of the ones I've tried I've had to actually input the courses into their database & they've all used the same thing for that process. Satellite pictures & point-n-click. Not anywhere close to being accurate enough for what's needed when out on the course. Just my input. I personally like nRange. $89 lifetime and you're done.

Re: what is best free Golf GPS application

I tried them all for BB....nRange, Green Finder, free Caddie, and GolfLogix, and I went with Gold Logix. Is the only app that gives you a fair amount of detail without having to add points while in play, that also allows you to keep score and stats. IMHO, this is the best gps app for BB In the market today.

Funny enough, I received a true golf GPS for fathers day...a Golf Buddy Tour...very nice!!! It shows distances to green on main screen with targets on a secondary screen. It has a very nice feature that the green image you get on the green is the actual green layout, and the view you get is one that matches your angle of approach...that being said, I still like the Golf Logix app much more. Why? Because it shows me a lot of information on the main screen...no need to toggle back and forth....and primarily the stat keeping is phenomenal....at the end of your round you can see what your performance was without having to plot your data on a third party system such as Scorecard or obbgolf...

Golf Logix is $40 per year, not unreasonable considering that most GPS units you will pay an annual fee (Not the case with GolfBuddy Tour).

GolfshotGPS is very good. I think RE yardage they'll all get the job done. I'm not certain what the other apps offer in RE to stat tracking. But I really like what Golfshot does. It represents stats graphically and with pie charts too. I like the fact that with a touch of the screen, you can see all of your rounds, your last 50 rounds (and hopefully the improvement), last 20 and last 5 rounds. Also stores all the individual scorecards too. No yearly charges either.

Problem with Golf Shot is that is only available for iPhones......

I currently have the GolfLogix GPS unit and I have tried the demo on my iPhone and it was great, I will probably get it on my iPhone when my $30 per year subscription runs out in October.
I thaught the App was about $30 for a lifetime membership, or am I mistaken?

Re: what is best free Golf GPS application

i really like BBGPSgolf for the BlackBerry. Free, has many mapped courses, and you can map your own using Google maps. Besides front/center/back, many holes have distances to hazards. If you play a course that doesn't, you can edit the course and add those hazards. I've found most distances within a few yards of sprinklerhead yardages, so accurate enough.

It used to crash on me occasionally, but that stopped when i disabled the scorekeeping and auto-hole advance.

Re: what is best free Golf GPS application

I'll be looking to use BBGPSGolf for now, once I pick up my Blackberry Curve 8530 as I've just managed to save up enough for it. :) I do have my eye on GolfLogix though, and will do a little comparison.

nRange is good. I did the 30 day free trial then realized I don't even need it because I only play 1 course 90% of the time. lol.

The problem with nRange is that is graphic intesive, and if you are not on a 3g plan with a fast phone, it will drive you nuts!!!1 My 8900 does not have 3G, so anything that requires to load a map slows me down way to much. Other than that it is a great app, with great customer support. During my trial period I contacted them about a course I wanted to play, and they had it mapped in about 2 weeks or so.

I caught a new deal out called a Swing Calibrator that does your personal yardage. the people are Pocket Caddie. I went to thepocketcaddie.com but there not open yet. The article I read said is was debuting spring 2013 for the golf season. It looked prettuy cool too it also had GPS with it to over 20,000 golf courses.

I don't know if it runs on a Blackberry but I use an app called Ninja Caddie.  It gives front, center, back, had a shot tracking feature that lets you see how far you hit it (there go my delusions) and allows you to use their online mapping feature that lets you mark anything on your course you want to be able to get yardages to, like bunkers, water hazards, etc.  And it is free.  Plus, at least on my phone, I have no problems with battery life.  If I start a round at 100% charged I generally end it with my phone still 80% charged.
